And now for news on a more local front, the rights to the Zelda la Grange’s book Good Morning, Mr. Mandela, has been picked up as the next biopic to focus on the life of our very own Madiba. Maven Pictures and Jacqui Lewis (who are building up a reputation of filming biopics) have secured the rights to this film which is likely to be a slightly more personal film that will highlight a different side of Mandela and give more insight into how he interacted with those around him on a daily basis.

La Grange, who was notable for being a white Afrikaner, grew up surrounded by people who perceived Mandela as a terrorist but she eventually served as one his most devoted associates for almost two decades. She began working in Mandela’s office as a typist in 1994, when he was elected as the post-apartheid president, and was promoted in 1999 to the post of private secretary to the office of the president. She served as his secretary till close to his death and so really got to know him in a personal level, and so we are bound to see a lot of insights and nuances to his character in this film.

We have seen Mandela portrayed in many different films, most recently Invictus by Morgan Freeman and Nelson Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom by Idris Elba and so it will be interesting who they turn to this time for the role. Both actors received numerous award nominations for their portrayal of Mandela and so whomever they give this to will have big expectations to live up to.

Maven co-founders Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler are producing with Lewis. The producers have not yet attached a director or actors for Good Morning, Mr. Mandela. We will keep you informed as more details get released.

Who do you think should take on the role of Mandela in this movie?
