Marvel and Disney! Movies that are fun for the whole family! And possibly also contain a death-toll so high, that they’ve unseated Hot Shots: Part Deux’s dubious claim of it being the bloodiest movie ever created. Director James Gunn’s sci-fi epic may be one of Marvel’s best films, but it earned that honour with a veritable bloodbath of on-screen casualties.

That’s according to The Guardian, who did a breakdown of the highest on-screen death tolls in cinematic history and found the Marvel movie to be utterly drenched in movie crimson liquids. The final tally of all those deaths then? A whopping 83 871 instances of people kicking the bucket. That’s around 14 times more than all of the people who died in 2014’s Dracula Untold, which came in at second.

And here’s where it gets even better. Remember Man of Steel in 2013, and the controversy surrounding the rampant destruction of property during the battle of Metropolis? Superman didn’t even crack the top 200 on that list. Which is probably why director Zack Snyder is doing a dance of joy right now, as Man of Steel only had 134 on-screen deaths. Here’s the full top ten list from The Guardian:

The top 10 deadliest Hollywood movies

1. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) – 83 871 on-screen deaths
2. Dracula Untold (2014) – 5687
3. The Sum of All fears (2002) – 2922
4. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003) – 2798
5. 300: Rise of An Empire (2014) – 2234
6. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) – 1741
7. The Matrix Revolutions (2003) – 1647
8. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) – 1417
9. Braveheart (1995) – 1297
10. The Avengers (2012) – 1019

Man, that Peter Jackson must really like his Orc blood. He has three films alone in the top ten. So what did Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 director James Gunn have to say about these results? Pretty much this:

Where do the bulk of these deaths come from in Guardians of The Galaxy then? You can thank Ronan for that, as the third act saw the Kree Accuser bring his flagship the Dark Aster to the planet of Xander and wipe out over 80 000 Nova Corps members in the process. Whoa. Check out the list in the original link above. And then join me as I get Disney to rebrand Marvel as “The bloodiest place on Earth”.
