Let’s not mince words here: Mel Gibson is not a nice person. Thanks to his reprehensible acts going public, the whole world knows this. So, not a nice person. But damn, the man knows how to make movies! It’s been 10 years since Gibson was behind the camera though, becoming a pariah in Hollywood in that time. He’s slowly been making his way back into the Hollywood limelight though, and now we have our first look at his most significant effort at redemption, the WWII drama Hacksaw Ridge.

The film the incredible true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), a WWII army medic who “in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He believed the war was just, but killing was nevertheless wrong; he was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon. As an army medic, Doss single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. He was the first conscientious objector to ever earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.”

That’s quite a tale and could make for one heck of a movie. I’m not 100% convinced by this first trailer that this is indeed the case as Garfield’s performance seems to be flip flopping between emotionally intense and corn-fed hokiness, and there appears to be a considered potential for schmaltziness here. But there are also some moments that look great.

Have a look below and see what you make of it.

Hacksaw Ridge also stars Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, and Vince Vaughn. It is scheduled for release on November 4, 2016.
