US cable network Starz has tapped Bryan Fuller, creator of the hugely successful NBC series Hannibal, to work with Smallville’s Michael Green in bringing Neil “Sandman” Gaiman’s highly acclaimed 2001 urban fantasy novel American Gods  to TV. There has been talk about an adaptation of American Gods for a long time now and earlier this year Starz’s partner, FremantleMedia North America bought the rights from HBO, who had ultimately failed to realize the show (which is strange looking at HBO’s success with Game of Thrones, in which they proved they were up to the task of cutting very long books down to 10 episodes per season).

American-Gods

Gaiman’s American Gods tells a sprawling epic in which traditional Biblical and mythological deities go head to godhead with their modern contemporaries who reflect “society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs.” The story is told from the perspective of Shadow Moon, “an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.”

Fuller, who first gained acclaim with the cult favourite series Pushing Daisies, had this to say about getting the opportunity to work on one of the legendary comic book scribe and author’s most famous works.

“Neil Gaiman has created the holiest of holy toy boxes with American Gods and filled it with all manner of magical thing, born of new gods and old. Michael Green and I are thrilled to crack this toy box wide open and unleash the fantastical titans of heaven and earth and Neil’s vividly prolific imagination.”

Gaiman, who will be an executive producer on the show, had this to add about the team of Fuller and Green – who will both be acting as showrunners and exec producers, while Fuller will be penning the pilot – bringing to life his multiple award winning book.

“When you create something like American Gods, which attracts fans and obsessives and people who tattoo quotes from it on themselves or each other, and who all, tattooed or not, just care about it deeply, it’s really important to pick your team carefully: you don’t want to let the fans down, or the people who care and have been casting it online since the dawn of recorded history. What I love most about the team who I trust to take it out to the world, is that they are the same kind of fanatics that American Gods has attracted since the start. I haven’t actually checked Bryan Fuller or Michael Green for quote tattoos, but I would not be surprised if they have them.”

A release date has not been given.

Awesome – and it is Starz, so the maturity will be intact.
