There are teaser trailers that are actually just trailers for the real trailer, and there are teaser trailers that contain nothing but overly dramatic music, a few printed choice quotes and not a single frame or peep of footage of the film its advertising. Then there are teasers like this one for Kill Your Darlings, the true story of how the murder of David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall) by Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan) in 1944, results in the great poets/writers of the Beat Generation – Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston) and William Burroughs (Ben Foster) – being drawn together.
The teaser starts off normally enough, and then just when it starts building to a climax… well, you’ll see. Or not.
You may now swear. Loudly.
I have no idea why they would release only the first half of the trailer, but what was shown certainly looked good. I’ve been mighty impressed with Radcliffe ever since he graduated from Hogwarts, Dane DeHaan has been tearing up the scene since he debuted in Chronicle and Ben Foster and Jack Huston have long been favourites of mine, the latter especially since his Richard Harrow has undoubtedly and consistently been my favourite character on HBO’s brilliant Boardwalk Empire.
Kill Your Darlings played the festival circuit earlier in the year to massive critical acclaim, and is currently riding a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 8.2/10. Critics praised the performances of the film’s leads and lauded the stylish direction of debut director John Krokidas, so this is definitely a film to keep an eye on, especially when it comes to awards season. Now if they can just give us the rest of that trailer.
Kill Your Darlings is scheduled for limited release on October 18, 2013.
