Hasbro looking to bring CLUE back to the big screen

cluedo board game

Hasbro is not looking to stop in trying to turn board-games into hit movie franchises. And while The Transformers has been a monumental box office success for them, their other foray into this market, Battleship, was less well received. That may have slowed them down a little and be a little more cautious in adapting movies, but they are still looking to make it work. And this time they want to adapt a game that was already made into a film: Cluedo (or Clue as it’s known in North America, for no-apparent reason).

The board-game was previously adapted into a 1985 feature film starring quite a strong cast such as Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd and Eileen Brennan, among others. However despite the film achieving some cult success, it’s fair to say it was pretty terrible and it’s no surprise there were no further sequels made to it.

However Hasbro, along with 20th Century Fox who have reportedly signed a deal to produce it, are looking to do things differently this time… by doing the usual and set it up as a franchise. Sigh. Tracking Board reports that instead of focusing on the board-game’s single-location premise, they want to expand the film to have a “worldwide mystery with action-adventure elements”, so that it can be set up for further sequels.

Hasbro was planning on making this film soon after Battleship bombed for them, and it would have been directed by Gore Verbinski. However, they decided to do a rethink on their movie adaptations and so it’s not clear whether Verbinksi is still attached to this project or not.

I hate the idea of a franchise of this even more than the idea of board games with little story being turned into films even more, so needless to say, I am not excited. I guess when you’ve made as much money as they have from The Transformers, you can afford to splash cash at movies and hope for the best. At least this premise may actually be more interesting than the first Cluedo film.

And outside of Cluedo, we know Hasbro is also working on making a Monopoly movie and reportedly also working on ideas for Candy Land and Risk too. How they haven’t decided to tap into their Magic the Gathering property as well confuses me, as I would’ve thought with the complex stories existing in that card game it would’ve been better suited to the movie world.

For those who live under a rock or who seem to think digital gaming is the only thing worth playing (same thing really), the Cluedo board game (officially launched in 1949) requires its players to determine which guest at a mansion is responsible for killing one Dr Black, as well as both the weapon they used and the room in which the murder was committed. The mechanics were fairly simple, but still quite addictive nonetheless.

Its unfortunate, but it seems we are going to have to brace ourselves for more board game movie adaptations in the future. Hey, I guess this film can’t be worse than the idea to make Centipede and Missile Command into movies.

This movie would not be good as everyone would already know that the butler did it with the lamp in the study.
