Welcome to the new year – which can mean only one thing for movie fans. Award season. Love it or hate it, it’s that time of year where Hollywood dishes out awards to itself and reminds the viewing audience that their box office receipts often mean very little when it comes to recognizing top movies at the award shows.

Or could this be the year where that trend changes as this time we have the likes of Black Panther nominated for the big prizes at this year’s Golden Globes? Could we finally see not only a super-hero movie get the recognition it deserves, but also prove that the millions of people that watched it know their stuff?

The Golden Globes might be the frontrunner to the more prestigious Oscars that come next month, but the event remains very important nonetheless. As the first of the big awards show to give out their top prizes, it gives us an indication of who could be in line for awards success at the later Guild and Academy Awards shows over the coming months. Or just be a big precursor to nothing because the Golden Globes are voted by the Foreign Press who mostly don’t belong to any of those shows. At least they include TV series which adds some further relevance to the awards show though.

Still, it’s good fun and with the awards announced on Sunday evening in Los Angeles (aka, early morning our time) we have a list of winners for you so that you can throw your opinion at it on why you think the winners are wrong (or right for that matter too).

So quite a few surprises and snubs among that list. Sadly Black Panther didn’t come away with any award love, nor did one of the big front-runners, as A Star is Born didn’t bag any awards outside of its excellent song, “Shallows”. The big winners on the movie side were Green Book, Vice, Roma and Bohemian Rhapsody. The first two are yet to arrive in South Africa with the last one Bohemian Rhapsody already proving popular with both local and international audiences for the nostalgic euphoria it creates through Queens’s popular music. With Roma available for viewing directly on Netflix, it represents a big success for the streaming service.

On the TV side of things, we had another Netflix show, comedy The Kominsky Method, proving to be a big winner, with The Americans beating out the popular British series The Bodyguard for the best drama prize.

If there is one thing that is apparent from the Golden Globes, it appears there are no clear front-runners for the award season quite yet though. Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody – both of which actually proved very divisive for critics – have probably laid down big markers to be ones to look out for along with Roma and A Star is Born. What do you make of the Golden Globe winners? Do you think the right movies and series won out or is it yet another sign that Hollywood awards shows are just popularity contests?

Just goes to show, never underestimate a comedy actor. They’re often capable of great dramatic performances.
Look at the late, great Robin Williams. His dramatic performances were amazing.

I will say this: In these days of late, we have been blessed with some truly amazing actors.

People that can own a comic, serious or action role and make it their own.

I feel for Bradley Cooper. He never seems to win any awards. Hope the Academy Awards actually reward him with a deserved statue.
