The Screen Actors Guild Awards – which, if the name wasn’t a dead giveaway, ditches all the technical stuff and focuses on the performances of actors/actresses, as voted for by their acting peers – took place last night.  As one of the last major awards show before the big daddy of them all, the Oscars, the SAG’s are always a pretty good indicator for Hollywood’s premier awards night, and if last night’s picks are to be trusted then it looks like Ben Affleck’s mantlepiece is about to get even more crowded.

Points of interest: I would really not have given Argo the Ensemble Award. While the entire cast all offered solid performances, you could argue that Alan Arkin (and possibly Bryan Cranston) elevated their game from “great” to “amazing”. With Lincoln, the entire main principle cast had standout performances, some of them with just two or three lines and the same could be said for Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
What I think happened here though, was all the actors getting together and deciding to send a giant “Up Yours!” to the Academy for completely ignoring Affleck as a director.
The other memorable bit of the evening, was of course Jennifer Lawrence’s “wardrobe malfunction”. When walking up to the stage to accept her award for Silver Linings Playbook, her lifting up of her skirt to walk up the steps caused the lower half of the Christian Dior gown to…. See the gown is apparently a tiered gown and…  well, there was this piece of sheer lace and… You know, what I have no idea what I’m talking about when it comes to designer female dresses. So let me just show you an animated gif of how we nearly got to see Jennifer’s Silver Lining.
