Irrespective of which side of the very polarizing love/hate line you find yourself when it comes to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Major Plot Holes, you probably loved Wonder Woman. The consensus has been almost universal when it comes to Gal Gadot’s long-awaited portrayal of DC Comics’ Amazonian heroine, as she stole several scenes from her black and blue co-star and got fans – including me – all  seriously hyped for her solo movie.

And up until now, all we’ve seen about the Patty Jenkins directed Wonder Woman has been some behind-the-scenes set pics showing off some of the WWI settings, but thanks to EW we now finally have something a lot more… Wonder Woman-ish, as the first image has been revealed featuring Wonder Woman and her Amazonian family.

That lineup shows Gadot up front as Wonder Woman aka Diana Prince, her mother and Queen of the Amazons Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) to her right, and respectively flanking them on right and left is Diana’s two military aunts – General Antiope (Robin Wright) and Antiope’s lieutenant, Menalippe (Loven Kongsli). In the most recent comic book origins for the character of Wonder Woman (which is believed to be what the movie is drawing from), Diana’s father is none other the Greek god Zeus. Unfortunately ol’ Pappa Thunderpants wasn’t exactly a present dad, leaving young Diana to be raised by the three woman above. But as director Patty Jenkins explains, the ladies don’t always see eye to eye as Hippolyta wants to shelter her daughter from the rest of the world, while the more militaristic Antiope wants to battle-harden her for what’s out there.

“She is the only child they raised together. And their love for her manifests in a different way for each of them.”

As a demi-goddess, Wonder Woman isn’t your typical modern day superheroine, being raised on the mystical island of Themiscyra (which incidentally, is completely populated by female Amazons, with not a single male in sight). Producer Charles Roven explained though that while Themiscyra and Wonder Woman’s origins is steeped in Greek mythology, this cinematic version of the Amazonian island is slightly different.

“Themyscira is influenced by the Greek but it’s clearly more then that. It’s a place that has the ‘you’ve never been to’ kind of feel. But once you’re there you’re not so sure you really want to leave so fast.”

Jenkins also added that as can be seen, the Amazonians don’t dress like superheroines either. Or superheroes. Or male warriors, as she and costume designer Lindy Hemming, made sure to have the Amazons look different.

“To me, they shouldn’t be dressed in armor like men. It should be different. It should be authentic and real – and appealing to women.”

And apparently, what appeals to women are high heels, which you can actually be see Wonder Woman wearing in the pic above. That bit of battle impracticality is obviously a throwback to the more silliy aspects of Wonder Woman’s classic comic book costume, but it does recall the “unrealistic” uproar created with last year’s Jurassic World when Bryce Dallas-Howard outran a T-Rex in stilletos. But according to Jensen, realism isn’t the goal here (even though the Amazons also do have more flat and practical footwear for heavy fighting).

“It’s total wish-fulfillment. I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time – the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.”

Long legs and heels that will definitely be used to kick a whole lot of ass come June 23, 2017, when Wonder Woman is released in cinemas.
