Ant-Man-crop

To paraphrase the words of the greatest male model that cinema has ever seen, “WHAT IS THIS?! IS THIS A TRAILER FOR ANTS?!”. Over the weekend, Marvel announced that they would be unveiling the first full trailer for Ant-Man during tomorrow evening’s premiere of new TV series Agent Carter, which of course meant throwing out a couple teasers for said trailer first. But the House of Ideas decided to have a little formic fun with its fans, as the announcement was paired with an “ant-sized” version of the trailer that had many people breaking out the magnifying glasses and possibly breaking their eyeballs trying to check out the first officially released footage from director Peyton Reed’s movie.

While that was a rather brilliantly tongue-in-cheek way to get people talking about the movie, unless you’re Marshall Bravestarr with your EYES OF THE HAWK!… HAWK… hawk…, then you’re probably a little disappointed now. But have no fear, as Marvel soon released a proper human-sized version as well. It doesn’t actually show star Paul Rudd in superheroic action as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man – unless you count seeing the backs of his legs as he is running – but we do get to see all the principal players here, from the aforementioned Rudd – looking very grizzled – to Michael Douglas as original Ant-Man Hank Pym, Corey Stoll as the villainous Darren Cross aka Yellowjacket, and Evangeline Lilly as Pym’s daughter Hope Van Dyne, sporting a very Wasp-ish hairdo, if you know what I mean.

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

If Peyton Reed’s action is even half as cool as the test reel footage that original director Edgar Wright put together – and which we were lucky enough to see at Disney’s press day last year – then, I can’t wait to see the full preview on Tuesday evening.

Ant-Man also stars Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Abby Ryder Fortson, Judy Greer, David Dastmalchian, Wood Harris, Gregg Turkington, T.I., and John Slattery, and is scheduled for release on July 17, 2015.
