As everybody’s favourite hairy Canuck mutant loves telling us, he’s the very best at what he does. And apparently what he does is not release trailers. But with The Wolverine‘s July release date rapidly approaching, we should be getting one any day now. Not today though. No, that’s reserved for a bit of movie trivia thanks to director James Mangold.

Mangold and star Hugh Jackman have been telling anybody with ears that while The Wolverine is set in the existing X-Men franchise continuity, that this will very much be a standalone adventure that’s less superhero flick and more character study (it just so happens to probably also feature a whole lot of characters studying their own entrails after being introduced to Wolvie’s six pointy friends). As such, Mangold took to twitter last night to reveal a single image from 10 different films that provided the most inspiration for The Wolverine’s tone and texture.

To make it interesting though, Mangold turned it into a game by not naming the movies and asking fans to see if they could work out each one. Which is exactly what we’re going to do now, because its a slow news day and we all love to lord our movie knowledge over other people.

@mang0ld: “I’m posting images from films that inspired / influenced THE WOLVERINE. Name the movies. Even better, go see them”

So you think you know them all? If so, sound off in the comments below, and the first one to get all 10 wins a fabulous, one of a kind, limited edition No-Prize!

Starring Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, and Brian Tee, The Wolverine snikt-snikt’s its way into cinemas on July 26, 2014.

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

  1. Even though I’m failing miserably at all of them, I know that the last one is a still from my all time favourite Western, The Outlaw Josey Wales.

    Awww yeah!
