Barely Lethal

I don’t know about you guys, but I would have loved it if my high school had offered some alternative extra-mural activities. Like markmanship training, swordfighting and kickass 101. Still, I never got to experience any of that, and had to settle for an ordinary life instead. Which is the exact opposite setup of Barely Lethal, as Hailee Steinfeld finds herself jugging homework and assassinations with a curfew.

A teenage special ops agent coveting a “normal” adolescence fakes her own death and enrolls in a suburban high school. She quickly learns that surviving the treacherous waters of high school is more challenging than international espionage.

Well that was fairly predictable. Still the idea of how Steinfeld’s character of Megan approaches a “normal” life is a novel one, as she happens to have gleaned all of that infor through pop culture. “She treats high school like a mission,” director Kyle Newman said to Slashfilm. “Her briefing is Teen VogueSeventeen, and everything from Mean Girls to Clueless.”

Cliched though it may be, Barely Lethal looks like a solid bit of entertainment for a quiet night. The film also stars Samuel L Jackson, Jessica Alba and Sophie Turner. It’ll be out as soon as the film appeals its current R-rating, which sounds like a terrible idea to me.

  1. We had target shooting with .22 rifles at school… was pretty cool… except they called it “Bisley”
