Hold on to your fezzes, here's the first official look at Peter Capaldi in costume for DOCTOR WHO!

They say that clothes make the man, and never has that been more true than on the longest running (and greatest!) sci-fi show in history, Doctor Who. Since William Hartnell first appeared on screen in 1963 in a Victorian era suit, the character of the Doctor has been widely identified by what he wore, whether it be the world’s longest scarf or turning celery into a fashion accessory. Really.

Thus far we’ve only seen the newly appointed 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi, on screen very briefly while sporting his predecessor’s duds, but we need to see what his look is. Well that “look” has arrived and I have to say, it’s rather spiffy.

BBC officially released the first image today of Capaldi donning a rather stylish navy blue and red suit that that looks rather stylish and a far departure from the mix-n-match haberdashery wardrobe that previous Doctors Matt Smith and David Tennant ran around in. Check it out for yourselves (click to enlarge):

Firstly, can I just say that based on those finger signs, if they can just dye his hair and give him a neat goatee, he’d be a dead ringer for another doctor: Marvel’s Doctor Stephen Strange, Sorcerer Supreme. I think I just inspired a whole bunch of fan fiction, but I digress.

One thing about the clothes of the Doctor over the years, is that they’ve always told us a lot about the wearer’s personality. And much like we’ve been told in the past, this new Doctor is a lot more serious and not as frivolously playful as the last two iterations. This is a man with a mission, and his clothes reflect that, as showrunner Steven Moffat explains:

“New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over – Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!”

The clothes, which immediately puts to mind the third Doctor, John Pertwee, seems to have an almost futuristic retro vibe going for it, something that was very intentional according to Capaldi himself:

“He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.”

While I personally really dig this new look, I do think that a scarf would have been a superb addition. Or at least loosen the top button of the shirt. Or maybe stick some broccoli through the lapel. I’m just saying. What do you guys think of the new duds?

Brilliant – Its Malcolm Tucker as The Doctor !! 🙂
(and since Pertwee is my favourite Doctor, the design nods back to his costumes are just fantastic!)
