Do not eat the blue mints in the new HOME trailer

When aliens invade, it’s up to a young woman and an alien outcast to set things right. This is roughly the plot of Home, the new Dreamworks Animation film starring Rihanna and Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons. They respectively voice Tip and Oh, who join forces to reverse an alien invasion of Earth. Humans have been moved elsewhere by the cute but conquering Boov, so Tip and Oh – with the help of a flying car – go on an “intergalactic road trip” to help save humanity and get Oh some respect from his fellow Boov.

Dreamworks revealed the first trailer a few months ago, but here is the latest version (plus the original):

Here’s the breakdown from Indiewire:

Tim Johnson is director of the film which is described as a post-apocalyptic-alien-invasion-buddy-comedy, with a synopsis that reads: “When Earth is taken over by the overly-confident Boov, an alien race in search of a new place to call home, all humans are promptly relocated, while the Boov get busy efficiently reorganizing the planet. But when one resourceful girl, Tip, (Rihanna) manages to avoid capture, she finds herself the accidental accomplice of a banished Boov by the name of Oh (Jim Parsons). Equally stubborn and set in their ways, these two fugitives realize there’s a lot more at stake than intergalactic relations as they embark on the road trip of a lifetime. Good thing they have a flying car.”

Jennifer Lopez voices Tip’s mother and Steve Martin does the same for Captain Smek, the leader of the Boov race.

What can I say? Celebrity voices, shallow jokes, endless set pieces, feel-good buddy moments we’ve seen in a million movies before, soundtrack that sound vaguely like it was ripped off from Song 2. Yup, this is a Dreamworks animation. Yeah, I’m not a fan, but count me as a minority. Dreamworks appears to be on a roll, though they should really start mixing up their style. I mean, this looks a lot like The Croods, How To Train Your Dragon and Monsters vs. Aliens. Hard to believe this same studio made Kung Fu Panda

Still, yay for a female lead and I think Jim Parsons is having a lot of fun here with his role. Rihanna, well, sounds like Rihanna, so until shown otherwise I’ll assume her voice talents are about as strong as her acting repertoire.

Home opens next year March in the U.S.
