Homefront: The Revolution will let players fight dirty

The premise for the original Homefront was quite intriguing. It’s not everyday we saw America being invaded after all, and that’s exactly what happened in the shooter when it released in 2011. The Greater Korean Republic (a force comprising both North and South) decided that the land of freedom was ripe for the taking, and, well… they did just that. It was up to the player to fight off the invaders and take back the country.

To be perfectly blunt, Homefront received mixed reviews, and wasn’t a particularly memorable title for most. Despite that, a sequel began development shortly after the release of the first game. Sadly, Kaos Studios, the developers, were shut down by THQ later that year.

Development was then moved to another studio, but then THQ themselves went bankrupt shortly after, meaning Homefront 2 was left with a big fat question mark hanging over it. Crytek later acquired the rights to the franchise, meaning development could take place once more. It also meant the franchise could be taken in a new direction.

Sorry, I felt I just had to share that, because when I first heard of Homefront: The Revolution, I had to be sure it was real, and I’m almost 100% sure I wasn’t the only one. Where did it come from? What is this new game about? Will it remedy the errors of the past? These are the sorts of questions I had on mind when I chatted to CJ Kershner, the Senior Narrative Designer for the game, at Gamescom.

I don’t think everybody should casually dismiss The Revolution, simply because the first Homefront wasn’t anything spectacular. Perhaps this new open world design with emphasis on hit and run, ‘dirty fighting’, is exactly what the franchise needs to truly stand out from the rest of the pack.

What do you think? Does the idea of an open world FPS appeal to you in any way? Are you keen to join the revolution?

  1. That sounds interesting – hopefully the sequel can improve on the original, because that was… not good.

I was going to leave it at that, but then I remembered more about playing the original. I regret spending $5 buying it on a Steam special. Because it was kak. A perfectly linear, horribly cliched, dull, thankfully very short, piece of kak. It’s the Falling fucking Skies of games. And now I realise I’ve enjoyed talking shit about the game more than I did playing it. WIN!

I enjoyed Homefront. But then I spent a lot of time playing the multiplayer after the campaign. So I am happy for a sequel.

I hate it. I love sci-fi & I tried so hard to like it, I really did. I managed to last until the 2nd episode of season 4, but I just couldn’t any more. It’s the only show I can say I ever actively hate-watched. It’s a contrived, overwrought, ham-fisted, cliche-ridden, jingoistic, daytime-soapie-level mess of a sci-fi show that was killing my brain cells.

I’m really not that demanding when it comes to TV shows myself, they just really need one interesting character, character interaction or plot thread to keep me watching & I’ll overlook a lot of the dumb – but this has none. I know a lot of other people like it, but OMFG I HATE IT SO MUCH.

        “I’ll love you forever” 5 seconds later… break up/dead
“I’ll never leave you” 5 seconds later… gone
“I’ll never lie to you” 5 seconds later… lies… followed by the inevitable “I can’t trust you!”
“We have no way to defeat them” 5 seconds later… oh hey look what I found, how convenient

        AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I liked the first one and will definately buy the second one. Not every game needs an open world to make it enjoyable. Especially shooters.

The first one had a very short campaign and seemed MP focused. But this looks way better
