I’m busy saving up, for a dream of mine: To one day sound just like Optimus Prime, one carton of Marlboro cigarettes at a time. When it comes to Autobot leadership, it’s hard to imagine anyone other than Optimus Prime yelling out a signature command to transform, roll out and go kick some ass. But at the same time, commanding the Autobots and wielding the matrix of leadership hasn’t been an exclusive role for the Cybetronian formerly known as Orion Pax.
Years back before Orson Welles became a ghost who ate phantasmic Mrs Pel’s brand of fish fingers, he happened to pop up in a huge Transformers animated movie. A movie that was pretty much designed solely so that it could market new toys to an impressionable youth. And the film wasn’t bad! Especially if you didn’t mind watching your favourite Autobots viciously murdered and torn apart as Unicron came devastatingly close to wiping out their civilisation.
One of those casualties in that film was Optimus Prime himself. Completely wrecked after a final battle with Megatron, Prime kicked the bucket and passed on the role of Autobot leader to Ultra Magnus and his ridiculously massive shoulders. And then Hot Rod got a chance to shine, reformatted as Rodimus Prime in the process. A character who’ll be popping up in Transformers: The Last Knight.
Looks like we’re getting a Bumblebee team-up film then, as Hot Rod is described as “brash, slightly arrogant and protector”. But more importantly, with the fifth Transformers movie being Michael Bay’s final flick in that franchise, does that mean that the days of Optimus Prime are numbered again? Who knows, because the answer to that is a definite “maybe”.
Transformers: The Last Knight is out next year on June 23 and stars Mark Wahlberg, Josh Duhamel, Anthony Hopkins and Peter Cullen. I DINK WE FOUND A TRANSFAWRMER.
