I really really want to be excited for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny. I’m such a gigantic fan of Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning first film, that I couldn’t help but get tingly in all the right places when a sequel was first announced. Add to that the fact that Michelle Yeoh would be returning, but this time star opposite Donnie Yen, and that kung fu film legend Yuen Woo Ping would be directing, and I was practically buzzing like a badly tuned radio!

But then that first trailer came out. I mean sure there appeared to be some cool kung fu scenes – Ping couldn’t do bad kung fu even if he tried – but the switch to English dialogue and the gratingly inappropriate rocktastic soundtrack was totally throwing me off. Now a new trailer has been released and while they’ve dropped the rock vibes (Phew!), it’s still not quite doing it for me. Yen is nearly entirely absent, Jason Scott Lee looks like he’s hamming it up as the movie’s villain, it seems completely lacking in that epic romanticism and sweeping operatic feel that Ang Lee brought to the original and I just realized that one of the other lead actors is actually the Asian guy from Glee that dances so well. Great.

Check it out for yourself:

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny also stars Harry Shum Jr. (that’s Glee guy, btw), Juju Chan and Eugenia Yuan. It will receive a limited theatre release as well as simultaneous Netflix release on February 26, 2016.
