If I had to pick just the one sci-fi movie I’m most excited to see this year, it would most definitely, without a doubt be the one starring Dohmnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac and young up and coming actress. Whether that means I’m talking about Star Wars: The Force Awakens or Ex Machina, I’ll leave up to your imagination.

The fact though that I’m even comparing a small budget indie three-hander potboiler from a first-time director to the latest installment in one of the biggest and most beloved film franchises in history helmed by one of the most famous filmmakers of the last few years, should tell you just how stupidly amped I am to see Alex Garland’s Ex Machina. And this fantastic new trailer – stuffed with glowing testimonials from folks who were lucky enough to have already sees the movie when it opened in the UK in January – sure as hell isn’t doing anything to dissuade me of those notions.

Garland – most famous for writing 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Dredd – appears to have made a seamless transition to behind the camera as this film appears to be filled with some gorgeous shots and an incredible use of location. Also, DAT ELECTRONIC SCORE! So yeah, you could say that I was most definitely excited for this.

Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac).

Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined.

Ex Machina opens internationally on April 10, 2015. It was originally actually scheduled to open locally this coming Friday, but I can no longer find it on the latest theatre release schedule. Which makes me very sad.
