I can count on no hands the amount of people I know that saw Jeremy Saulnier’s Blue Ruin. Which is to say, nobody, including me. This is despite the fact that Saulnier’s feature film debut was hailed by many as not just one of the best films of 2013, but one of the best American revenge thrillers of the last decade. But despite the movie completely lighting up the film festival circuit, it barely got mainstream exposure, meaning most people never even knew about it, and some of those who did – like myself – couldn’t find it anywhere to watch it.

I am not repeating that mistake with Green Room though. Saulnier’s second film – he sure does love those colours in the titles – has already been pulling in the same kinds of accolades its predecessor did when it hit Cannes last year, but this time around it has a big bald trump card to make sure it gets a whole lot more exposure: Patrick Stewart.

Oh and not just any Patrick Stewart, as the fan-favourite Star Trek veteran and one of the internet’s most beloved uncles (the other being Ian McKellen of course) is turning villainous this time around as the (surprisingly) vicious leader of a group of neo nazis who set out to kill the members of a punk rock band playing a gig in a remote dive known as Green Room, after the musos accidentally witnesses the skinheads commit a horrific murder.

And Stewart is not the only pro in this tale as Imogen Poots, Anton Yelchin and Macon Blair (who also starred in Blue Ruin) are all apparently fantastic. By all accounts it’s a brutal, dizzying thriller, meticulously executed by Saulnier, and now we can finally get a taste of it thanks to the first released trailer that debuted on Empire yesterday.

Check it out below.

Green Room opens in the US on April 1, 2016 before hitting the UK on May 13, 2016. It will hopefully get a wider international release not too long after that.
