Ice Cube has shown in the past that he is not too afraid to shed the bad boy image and take on more family friendly roles. He has been in movies like Boyz N The Hood, Higher Learning, Triple X and then we have also seen him in movies like Barbershop, First Sunday and Are We There Yet. One thing that I am sure of when it comes to Cube, it’s that the guy knows how to make bank with his projects and when it comes to making money it doesn’t get better than a classic Disney remake these days.
Cube is reportedly teaming up with the Director from acclaimed hit musical Hamilton, Tommy Kail and Disney for a modern take of the Charles Dickens classic – Oliver Twist. Now Disney have been hard at work in recent years remaking many of our beloved classics and turning crazy profits along the way. Not all of these remakes have received the warmest of receptions but nostalgia is a powerful tool and one that keeps fans checking in just to see if our memories have been done justice. Not too long ago Jamie Foxx did a modernized version of Annie that worked for the most part but I still feel falls well short of the original. Oliver Twist though has had many reincarnations over the years with Roman Polanski’s 2005 version being the last time the story has been retold, so it might seem a bit soon for another Oliver Twist remake.
I personally think a modernized version of the story is welcome to cater for the younger audiences of today. Cube is set to star as well, although which part he will play has not yet been clarified. I would think he would be best suited to play Fagin and the way things are going these days I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kevin Hart play the part of Oliver, the guy is in everything these days. Marc Platt and Jeff Kwatinetz are producing, while Cube will also produce via his CubeVision banner.
There is no official title as yet nor release date.
