Okay, this is going to sound weird. According to just about everything I’ve read online from people who were fortunate enough to see I Declare War, a highly imaginative new coming of age indie flick, during its run on the festival circuit earlier in the year, I have to wholeheartedly recommend that everybody sees it. But – and here’s where it gets weird – I also have to tell you to rather not watch the trailer, since depicting what the film is truly about and how good it is, is almost impossible with a 2-minute clip. Apparently.

So, uhm… enjoy not watching this new trailer?

Armed with nothing more than twigs, their imaginations and a simple set of rules, a group of 12-year-olds engaged in a lively game of Capture the Flag in the neighborhood woods start dangerously blurring the lines between make-believe and reality. Rocks = Grenades. Trees = Control towers. Sticks = Submachine guns. The youthful innocence of the game gradually takes on a different tone as the quest for victory pushes the boundaries of friendship. The would-be warriors get a searing glimpse of humanity’s dark side as their combat scenario takes them beyond the rules of the game and into an adventure where fantasy combat clashes with the real world.

I have to admit, based on that trailer alone, I’m not sure I would have given I Declare War a second glance, but according to pretty much everybody who’s seen it, it’s a hilarious, touching and action packed coming of age story, that tenderly and inventively deals with what it means for kids to take their first tentative steps towards adulthood. By using imaginary mounted .50 caliber machine guns.

I Declare War opens fire on audience on VOD on July 26, before opening to limited theatrical release on August 30, 2013.
