I don’t have much of a sweet tooth; desserts and other sugar-laden confectionary are far less likely to get a rise out of me as much as a savoury snack – but every so often I get a craving for something sweet. And if there’s any one sweet thing that ignites the fires in my belly, it’s custard. Yes, that beautiful blend of dairy, eggs and sugar gets my taste buds all wet.

Often used as a filling in tarts, pastries and pies, there’s to my mind no better application for custard than the Portuguese custard tart, the Pastéis de Nata. Delightfully light, fluffy pastry cups are filled with a sugared egg-yolk custard  and baked, producing the most moreish little morsels.

Their origin is actually quite an interesting one. As with many Portuguese pastries, they found their origins in the clergy. Monks in Santa Maria de Belém in Lisbon used egg whites to starch and stiffen their clothing and linen – leaving them with large quantities of unused yolks. These yolks ended up being used in the myriad pastries and confectionaries we get from Portugal.

Though you can find Pastéis de Nata anywhere that significant numbers of Portuguese folk gather, the very best to my mind can be got from a bakery in Queen Street in Johannesburg’s Kensington; Pastelaria Princesa. If you do go, make sure to try out their Prego rolls; the rolls themselves smothered in a garlic butter that marries beautifully with their marinated prego steaks. I also heartily recommend their Jesuita pastries (also, as their name implies, finding their roots in religion); another delectable custard pastry.

Just make sure you leave with at least a half dozen of the Pastéis de Nata. You will want more.

Here’s the news we didn’t post because we were f*%king dis-custard.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

  • WarframedSquirrel

Oh man I love those custard things in the header… I just can’t find any decent ones in my area though 🙁

    • Unavengedavo

Are they the same as these cream filled éclairs?

      • Anonymous

They rather use the “egg white” to “starch” their clothing.

  • Mossel

All these images made me super wet…in and around my mouth.

    • Admiral Chief Assassin

      • Mossel

Don’t act like you didn’t lick your lips!

        • Admiral Chief Assassin

          I didn’t tbh

    • Hammersteyn

I feel a stirring… in the depths of my empty stomach!

    • Sith JJ

Same thing happens to me every time I visit a wine farm. I think reasons differ though.

  • Admiral Chief Assassin

Martha and Sandy must be proud!

    • hairyknees

Who do you think rustled up these images? I ate them all… FOR SCIENCE!

  • Alien Emperor Trevor

Great. Just what I needed to see before heading off to klap it. Bastard 😛

    • I am more concerned why Geoff has a thing for diaries…

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

I’m assuming it’s because he’s such a Vampire Diaries fangirl.

  • Mossel

Tasty Tuesday just made me realize something…IT’S ONLY FUCKING TUESDAY!!!

    • Admiral Chief Assassin

Indeed, nothing cocks up your Friday worse than realising it is ONLY TUESDAY!!!

    • Hammersteyn

Yeah, they should move it to Thursday. Boobs makes me feel a lot better than food does.

    • Tell me about it!

    • Sith JJ

      Pure evil

  • He eats diaries?! The monster!

  • Hammersteyn

    That Project Morpheus game Summer Lesson….. where’s @umarbastra:disqus ?

    • BacchusZA

“Summer Lesson puts players in the bedroom of a schoolgirl, where they then socialise and interact with her…….”

“No further game details have been provided, other than a basic gesture
system in which the player is able to communicate with the girl by
      nodding or shaking their head…..”

      Made in Japan?
Teenage schoolgirl in a short skirt?

Top couple of buttons undone on her blouse?

I can see absolutely NOOOOOOO way at all in which this might go in horribly innapropriate directions…..

You have to love the Japanese, really……

      • Hammersteyn

And you use a VR headset O_o

    • PERSONA 5!!!! (Umar)

      busy playing it…..*fap fap fap*

      • Hammersteyn

    • You’re in for a treat 😛

      • WarframedSquirrel

lol I see what you did there.

    • hairyknees

      • WarframedSquirrel

I grew up in a predominately Porra area in JHB… so there’s a high chance of that happening lol

  • Bianca

Best custard pastries I’ve ever eaten were in Mozambique. For some reason they manage to make them so irresistible and delicious that if you come back to your little beach house with a box containing 10, people discard any type of formality and become barbarians.
    Ok. No that’s just me.

  • Mark Treloar

Because your taste buds are usually dry?

  • Skyblue

So I hate the food pics and the new look of the site, sorry, my opinion.

Mighty No. 9 is looking sweet!

  • Skyblue

2nd September and PSN still only offering us August PS+ games…?

  • Kensei Seraph

I ate breakfast less than an hour ago and now I’m craving custard tarts.
    Geoff you magnificent custardy bastard.
