Gather children; seat yourself around the warm, cosy fire, because grandpa has a new classic game to share with you today. It’s a real doozy, so make sure you have your hot cup of cocoa ready!
I don’t think any game ate more 50c pieces than Metal Slug. It came out back in 1996, when I was an 8 year old boy, and it helped nurture my gaming addiction into what it is today.
I remember going to a Portuguese hangout (typical I know) with my parents and siblings almost every Sunday, forcing down lunch, and heading straight to the bar area to watch the other kids jamming the action packed shooter. It didn’t take too much longer for me to head back to the table to pester my dad for any spare coins. In time, I learnt to make those little bronze pieces last the entire afternoon/evening.
You see, Metal Slug starts out easy enough, but after the first level or two, it became rather difficult. Still, learning how to navigate all that chaos with a single life all two was stupidly satisfying.
With a variety of weapons, wacky characters, and some damn tough bosses, it remains firmly planted in my memory and is easily one of my favourite childhood games. It has spawned several sequels, modern day ports, and I’m sure, still causes many gamers to rage today.
