If there’s one thing that I enjoyed about E3, it was getting to meet famous people that no one outside of gaming would actually recognise. I got the voice of Invader Zim himself to shout DOOOOOM at me. I geeked out with Rocksteady and their public relations face Dax Ginn. I waved at who I think may have been Reggie Fils-Aime and was promptly beaten into a bloody pulp by his security team. Man, it was magical.

In Other News: Bayonetta looks weird in a Princess Peach outfit, Mario drives us around the Benz, Madden 15 stops you in your tracks and get to know the real Oddsock.

Here’s the news that we didn’t post today, because I was too busy listening to early Linkin Park albums after playing Dark Souls for the first time.

Yeah, apparently their engine isn’t being picked up by very many folks, and the production of Ryse was an utter mess. Additionally, they haven’t been able to release a decent game since Crysis 1 and Far Cry 1.

Seriously? Not even remotely the issue. F2P model has worked for some, and Crytek hasn’t been in that realm for long enough for it to have had this effect.

No, the problem is their middleware is too expensive, and the games they DO make, are utter garbage. Sure, they may look pretty, but the writing, plot, script, and direction are fucking terrible.

Crysis 1 was decent, only because the level design and freedom of exploration/attack were top notch, to go with a pretty fantastic engine. Crysis 2 was an abortion of everything that made Crysis 1 (turning everything into a corridor shooter) great, Crysis 3 attempted to expand the level size, but ultimately was just a slightly larger expanse of corridors.

Crytek’s great at making pretty middleware, but they should immediately fire their entire writing staff, because they fucking blow.

            Here’s more on it though:

UE4 going open source is probably the final nail in the coffin.

The Warthunder F2P games are quite successful apparently.

Another serious issue w/ Crytek, is the amount it costs for them to build a game/engine, versus that of other extremely successful devs. Look at CD Projekt Red and their work. Their engines are tight, graphically impressive, great story, and they cost less than what, 20 million to make? And then look at Crytek who could use 5 times that, easily?

It makes no sense, especially given, for all intents and purposes CDPR’s games are a much much better overall package.

Tell that to the guys at world of tanks, they have more money than you can shake a big stick at, probably because it is all in Cypress and they can’t actually withdraw it.

Yeah, I actually lost interest in Crytek games after Crysis 1. I thought it played horrible, same with Far Cry 1(which I thought was one of the worst FPS games ever created).
A friend told me that FC3 was on a different engine, and man its such an incredible improvement over Cryengine in terms of playability.

Never like to see a company close down, but I’ve never been a fan. Its going to be interesting to see what Star Citizen is going to do if Crytek goes belly up.

Can’t argue a person’s opinion on a game, everyone has different tastes. I will say however that a company folding because their games suck, is kind of the only way we as consumers can dictate the direction of the industry. It’s a shame that the employees could potentially lose their jobs, but the bosses, certainly need to go, and their writing staff.

I quite enjoyed the first FarCry myself. Some parts were pretty damn tense.
Two wasn’t bad. (I liked the whole Africa thing since few games have done that). Three I played a lot, I must admit, but Uplay made it a less than ideal experience.

            June 23, 2014 at 16:40

2 was buggy, that was kinda the issue there. But, Far Cry 2 and 3 are also not Crytek games. Crytek sold the IP, or didn’t own it in the first place.

            June 23, 2014 at 16:42

Ah. I think I knew that at some stage.
I hated the lack of stealth in FarCry 2. That was a game breaker for me. Hated it when I was using a sniper rifle 200m away and someone spotted me.

            June 23, 2014 at 16:44

Yeah, it was a pretty big deal among the PC community when Far Cry changed hands. Allot of my PC gaming friends who loved the first one, hated where they took it in the 2nd, though the 3rd was received much more favorably.

To each their own, for many the original Far Cry was a noteworthy exception to the shitty Crytek IP rule. Same with Crysis 1.

            June 23, 2014 at 16:32

Crysis 1 was great and the rest were just so dull and cliché

          • Brian Murphy

            June 23, 2014 at 16:33

Definitely, the sub-par plot of Crysis 1 was easy to overlook, because you were too busy sneaking around, or speed dashing into and laying waste. The 2nd and 3rd just sucked, because the things that allowed us to overlook the plot in 1, were gone in 2 and 3.

          • Sith JJ

            June 23, 2014 at 16:36

I agree. And the way they simplified the suit mechanics by merging certain abilities was just another step back. Best time I had in Crysis was hunting the people and attacking enemy outposts. The alien parts weren’t so great, but the gameplay made it fun.
I’d like to see a Crysis game without the alien parts (it felt a bit cliché to me).
            Just supersoldier vs the world.

          • Brian Murphy

            June 23, 2014 at 16:37

Yeah the simplification of the suit was really a horrible idea, and proved the point of how difficult it is to shrink down PC control scheme to console/controller. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

And killing people with chickens was awesome.

            June 23, 2014 at 16:46

It was also a heck of allot of fun trying to run speed boost jump into the air, then switch to the sharpshooter and snipe someone while in the air flying through trees lol.

Or just straight up punching vehicles off the road…that was fun.

          • Sith JJ

            June 23, 2014 at 16:50

Haha. Wow. I have to play that game again and try the sniping thing.
I loved ambushing people. Speed boosting up to them, then switching to strength and throwing them.
You had to be so careful on how and what you used from your suit and how to conserve your energy. It made it both challenging and exciting. Two had none of that. And as you said below, becoming a corridor shooter ruined it.

          • Brian Murphy

            June 23, 2014 at 16:51

Especially when you amped up the difficult. Delta (I think), difficulty, made your suit pretty much irrelevant, at least as far as sneaking went. They could hear your footsteps, and they’d track you down pretty damn quick lol. Back then, only GSC’s X-Ray engine had a better, more complex AI system.

Crysis 1 was fine for me personally. I actually enjoyed it and the polish on the title was second to none. Crysis 2 was admittedly less impressive but was still not a bad game to play through as I still had fun with it. Crysis 3 is one of the most beautiful games I have ever seen in my life but was sadly just plain shite in the story and gameplay dept.

I was a big fan of the original Far Cry as well.

          • Brian Murphy

            June 23, 2014 at 23:34

Oh I loved the hell out of Crysis 1, don’t get me wrong, I just didn’t think the plot was anywhere close to the engine in regards to effort. Far Cry 1 was indeed badass, but I still have to put Stalker on top of them all.

Yeah, but have you played this?

            http://www.moddb.com/mods/lost-alpha

It’s a legit standalone mod, created from the 2004 build of Shadows of Chernobyl that GSC released to the public in 2009. They’ve meticulously recreated other areas from the game, as well as whole new areas to explore, as well as new ‘layers’ to the areas. It’s one of the biggest mods I’ve ever seen, and yeah, check it out.

And it’s fairly well graphically updated 🙂

Far Cry 1 was one of the best FPS games ever made for PC. It almost stole DOOM 3 and Half Life 2’s thunder when released earlier that year. Completely open ended approach to every combat scenario and awesome graphics (at the time).
You are the problem (as usual) :-p

Of course, this guy was crazy…same dude jumped a 6 foot brush pile (while running from 2 opponents) flipped around mid-jump, shot the two guys pursuing him and then gracefully touched down, using a tree and the back of his head to stop his momentum. Knocked himself out for a couple minutes heh.
