Incredible X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST first reactions! Plus, update on X-MEN: APOCALYPSE characters

Remember when director Bryan Singer first unveiled his version of speedster mutant Quicksilver, played by Evan Peters? Oh, how we all laughed and laughed at his shiny jacket, dopey utility belt and silly goggles. Well, it seems that ol’ Pietro Maximoff is about to have the last laugh, if these first reactions to X-Men: Days of Future Past are to be believed.

The mega-mutant sequel had its first screening in Los Angeles over the weekend, and not only have the LA press in attendance almost universally praised what Singer has managed to pull off with a potentially perilous story and a massive cast, but everybody is absolutely raving about Quicksilver and something he does in the movie (no spoilers were given away, so we don’t know exactly this is, but the trailers hint at some type of heist).

And there’s a whole lot more of those popping up all the time. You may soon be adding the opinions of both Nick and myself to that list of praise as well, as we’ll be checking out the film this coming Thursday, which suddenly cannot come quickly enough.

I must admit though, I was initially just cautiously optimistic about X-Men: Days of Future Past, with that caution being the result of Singer himself. While his original two X-Men films helped us usher in the current superhero ago of movies, when stacked up next to Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, you couldn’t help but notice their flaws, particularly the morose and angsty tone and character designs. And with Vaughn relinquishing his director’s seat on Days of Future Past to Singer, all of those missteps seemed to be returning again. Clearly, operative words there apparently being “seemed to be”.

Unless, his current legal troubles turn even messier, Singer is expected to be getting to work soon on his Days of Future Past follow-up, X-Men: Apocalypse, and he spoke to Sci-Fi Now about how the two films relate to each other:

“My next goal is how did the X-Men come together? That story hasn’t been told yet, so [Days of Future Past] is the inbetweenquel [laughs]. It’s in between the birth of that relationship with Charles and Erik and the formation of the X-Men.”

So with Days of Future Past being all about time travel and probably creating a new timeline, does that mean that we may just see some old faces like Cyclops and Jean Grey being recast/revised in X-Men: Apocalypse? Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg definitely thinks so.

Yeah, exactly. In a way, it feels like from this point forward we can do whatever we wants, but we’ll be moving forward with some of the actors from the First Class/Days of Future Past cast, so there’s stuff we’ve done in these last couple of movies that we’ll definitely continue doing for them, at least in Apocalypse, if not more movies going forward.”

If they do go with a new Cyclops – you know, the massively powerful, very important leader of the X-Men – lets just hope that Singer and co have now actually stopped hating him (See: X-Men: Last Stand, where Cyclops, doesn’t just die very early, he doesn’t even get the dignity of an on-screen death).

X-Men: Days of Future opens locally on May 23, 2014, while X-Men: Apocalypse drops nearly exactly two years later on May 27, 2016.
