THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR! DO NOT READ UNTIL YOU HAVE WATCHED THE MOVIE!

Avengers: Infinity War is without a doubt Marvel’s ballsiest movie yet, as it goes for big shocks right from the get-go. Withing the opening 10 minutes we’ve already seen Heimdall shish kebabed with his own sword, Hulk beat up so bad he turns into the equivalent of a sullen teen who doesn’t want to leave his room, and Loki’s trachea crushed like a paper cup. That’s not to mention the film’s grim as hell ending as Thanos essentially wins by finishing the Infinity Gauntlet and turning half the population of the entire universe – including many of the most popular heroes – into leaves on the wind (sorry, bad choice of words, fellow Firefly fans).

Even with those events though, the most dramatic moment – and heartbreaking, thanks to Josh Brolin’s fantastically emotional performance as Thanos – has to be when Thanos acquires the Soul Stone via the sacrificial act of throwing his “daughter” Gamora off a cliff to her death. But was that her actual death? As Thanos later performs his finger snap of doom, he is momentarily transported to a strange place where he comes face to face with a young Gamora. This scene has led some fans to theorize that what we’re seeing is the Marvel Comics cosmic plane called Soul World which exists inside the Soul Stone and that maybe Gamora wasn’t killed but she’s just trapped there (the pool of green blood surrounding her broken corpse to the contrary, of course)

Well, over the weekend, while putting in a surprise appearance at Iowa City High School, Infinity War co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo seemingly confirmed this theory during a Q&A with the students (via Reddit) and when prompted about Gamora being inside the Soul Stone, even went as far as to say that “She in fact is, yes.” Except that was apparently all wrong as the Russos are now trying to backpedal their statement in an interview with ComicBook.com, saying that their comment was a “misrepresentation” and that Thanos was just seeing a “spiritual representation” of Gamora.

The power that it took Thanos to click his fingers, he’s so dramatic that if you look closely at the film and the damage of the gauntlet. You look closely at the very last scene, it damages his arm dramatically. And that moment when he clicks his fingers sends him into this ethereal plane inside of the Soul Stone where as part of his quote unquote hero’s journey in the film, he has one last moment to convey a sense of guilt about what he’s done. It illustrates what a complicated character he is. So, to clarify, it’s a spiritual representation of her and obviously that’s something that the Soul Stone has power to do. But really it’s there to illustrate his pain and his guilt. I wouldn’t read much more into it beyond that.

This actually lines up perfectly with a previous statement Joe Russo made on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, saying that “I think it’s a reflection of [Gamora’s] spirit…”. It also doesn’t undermine the most effective death of the entire film. I mean, we already know that there are sequels planned for Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy, so them being erased from existence by Thanos is definitely just a temporary annoyance.

The Russos are insisting that everybody that dies is dead though, despite how unlikely it seems, because “the story comes first” over sequel plans. This is probably just clever wordplay though: They all are dead… but they’re going to get brought back to life somehow in Avengers 4. Except for Gamora – her death is the one that has to and probably will stick. Now if only actress Zoe Saldana can stop letting slip in interviews that she has to film more Gamora scenes for Avengers 4, then I can keep on believing that.
