Cine Prestige

Last night we were invited to the opening of a brand new cinema in the Ster-Kinekor complex at The Zone in Rosebank, however this was no normal cinema but rather the first (for Ster-Kinekor) of a new range of upmarket cinema’s called Cine Prestige.

The difference between these new prestige cinema’s and the standard ones couldn’t be more pronounced with huge comfortable recliners holding us snugly while we sipped on wine and ate real food while watching one of the blockbuster movies of the year, The Hunger Games.

I could babble on for ages about how the cinema looked and felt but thankfully SK were kind enough to give us a jewel encrusted memory stick with some pictures on and that makes my job a lot easier.

As you can see the chairs are a huge improvement from the usual economy class airline seats in most cinema’s and the little tables with snack platters really do make you feel like you’re sitting in the comfort of your own home, just with a most amazing movie setup.

There are a variety of snack platters you can order ranging from R59 to R89 (that we saw)

It’s officially the nicest cinema we’ve ever experienced and just that little touch better than the ones tried in Australia so Ster Kinekor has done well with their first launch.

But you know there is a downside to all of this so how much is this going to cost us?

Well I’m happy to say I’m blown away by the price, yes it’s more expensive but I think it’s obvious why.

The standard Cine Prestige ticket will cost your R85 per movie but if you have a Ster-Kinekor Movie Club card, Discovery Vitality or you’re an Edgars Club member then you can be reclining in absolute luxury for a mere R42.50.

If you want to impress your date then this is the cinema you want to take her/him to.

Cine Prestige is now open at The Zone in Rosebank and I suspect we’ll be hearing about new venues in the very near future.

I might actually go to the cinema again – unless even this one becomes populated with stupid rowdy teenagers on their Blackberry’s. Also, GET OFF MY LAWN.

I seriously doubt many rowdy teenagers are going to pay extra to ignore a movie… also it’s public property deal with it

I dislike that, sadly, this is the opinion. Don’t like smokers: deal with it. Don’t like noisy bums in movies or theatre: deal with it. Hijacker rode over your cat: deal with it.

I chose to deal with it by not paying for overpriced popcorn to sit in a crummy seat while Bucko gets a handjob in the row behind me, while his mate chats on his cell. If only there was a better option than deal with it.

Get off my lawn, I’m watching a BLURAY.

I was calling the lawn public property not the cinema…

I just hope this doesn’t become like 3D where the most highly anticipated films only screen there so you’re forced to fork out extra.

P.S. How about we get press cards for Ster Kinekor?

They do offer 3D in these cinema’s as well so it can be the worst of two worlds 😉

Hopefully the press card issue will be sorted out soon,

Seeing as you pay in excess of R40 for a movie ticket already, this is actually awesome value for money.

That’s what I thought as well. I wouldn’t mind forking out for the cinema experience, if the experience is this awesome.

Looove leather seats & we’r going “prestige” tomorrow. The fact of the matter is less (over perfumed & no neck) people in a cinema makes perfect sense. Looking forward.

Oh wow. That food! Those seats! My couch doesn’t even look that comfortable.

I would hardly call finger snacks real food. Now, if they catered pizza and let me have beer we might have a deal. Sadly that price is still painful. If cinemas want my business, how about finding a way to reduce regular prices – and I’m not talking about blackmailing us into signing up for some club. These types of cinemas are nice – there are a few in Dubai – but beyond the comfort perks there isn’t much to them. Useful if you want to impress a date.

Until then my home screen, DVDs and the fridge more than do enough to cover my needs.

You can take beer in as well.. no pizza though but I’m not sure that’s a deal breaker for me.

Obviously at home will always be cheaper but those of us with kids like to get out sometimes and pretend we’re still humans

That’s fair. I’ll be honest, it will take a lot to lure me back to cinemas, so this kind of thing is not aimed at me.

I hope they keep these cinemas well cleaned. Snack foods (particularly when you’re fumbling around in the dark) have a tendency to end up on the carpet very easily. You don’t want to pay premium price when you’re smelling week-old sushi hidden beneath a seat
