Is AGENT CARTER coming to an end?

Much has been said of Marvel Studios’ lack of female-led feature films (with most of it being unpublishable on a family-friendly blog), but over on their TV side it’s a different story. Marvel’s Agent Carter has seen titular star Hayley Atwell’ Peggy Carter kicking some serious 1950’s butt for a season and a half now, in one of the most fun and fresh corners of the MCU. But alas, it looks like this ride may coming to an end.

While neither Marvel or US TV network ABC has made any official comments about the show’s future, Deadline is reporting that Atwell has been cast as the lead in the pilot for Conviction, a new legal drama also being produced by ABC. As Peggy Carter, Atwell has certainly overcome a slew of challenges in the most impressive way possible, but even the pioneering SHIELD founder can’t be in two places at the same time, which gives serious doubt as to whether Agent Carter will be returning for a third season.

The espionage-adventure show has never drawn more than just middling live ratings (though it gets a fair bump in the DVR sectors), but ABC has always been a bit more lenient with the Marvel shows as they have such a huge built-in audience. Deadline’s sources at ABC have indicated that if both Agent Carter is actually picked up for a third season and Conviction is given a full series order, the network will work out some plan to allow Atwell to fit both shows into her schedule, but realistically things are not looking good for Marvel’s show.

And while Atwell has reprised the role – which she originated in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger – several times on the big screen, the last time we saw the character in modern times was in Captain America: The Winter Soldier where she was already a very elderly, bedridden lady. In other words, if Agent Carter was not renewed then we probably won’t be seeing the character again, unless it’s in a flashback like in Ant-Man.

Coincidentally though, Conviction will see Atwell playing another character named Carter – in this case, Carter Morrison “the brilliant but ne’er-do-well daughter of a former President, who is blackmailed into taking a job as the head of Los Angeles’ newly created Conviction Integrity Unit. She, along with her team of lawyers, investigators and forensic experts, work together to examine cases where there’s credible suspicion that the wrong person may have been convicted of a crime.”
