Is JJ Abrams' STAR TREK sequel headed for some Darkness?

A lot of people have been eagerly awaiting the title of the new Star Trek film, as traditionally the film’s suffix will shed some light on what its story entails. I mean, Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan indeed featured somebody named Khan and he was was indeed rather upset. And if you can’t figure out the main plot point for Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock, then I’m not even sure how you’re operating a computer right now.

But it would seem that in typical JJ Abrams fashion, the next film will not only be eschewing the traditions of numbers and colons, but will also be offering us a big fat zero when it comes to plot hints.

And for those of you who can’t stand the suspense any longer, well the new movie shall be called… Star Trek Into Darkness.

TrekMovie was the first to sniff out the new title, finding out about it from their unknown sources. The story was then given a much more emphatic confirmation when ComingSoon.net discovered that MarkMonitor, an anonymous internet registration service that Paramount has been making use of recently has secured the domain names to both www.startrekintodarkness.com and www.startrekintodarknessmovie.com, both of which are just currently blank pages.

As for the story implications… Yeah, I got nothing either (Well, there is a very dirty Kirk and Uhura joke in there, but my Momma raised me far too proper for me to make it). “Into Darkness” reveals absolutely nothing about whether or not Benedict Cumberbatch’s villain will actually be Khan Noonien Sing or Gary Mitchell, the two conflicting rumours that have been raging back and forth for the last 8 months now.

I would say that the whole “Darkness” thing would be hinting at a much more serious tone, if it wasn’t for Capt. James Tiberius Kirk himself, Chris Pine, who just last week said that they’re “not making Batman” and that there’d be much more of a “comedy” element.

When it comes to the title itself, I know that Paramount previously indicated that they wanted to ditch the old naming convention, but if there was ever a title in need of a colon, that would be it. Star Trek: Into Darkness just reads a hell of a lot better, if you ask me.

I’m hoping that Paramount still sees the errors of their grammatical ways, before making this official.

So what do you guys think of the new title?

JJ Abrams worries me these days. He should focus less on trendy hipster glasses, and more on making less overhyped and unsatisfying tv series. Filmwise he’s done alright, but we’ll see if he can hit a homerun on this one as well.

I’m liking it. Perhaps it’s like, the Enterprise has rolling blackout issues?

I think the darkness refers to an even bigger PLOT HOLE where nobody knows or cares why the Antag wants them dead.

    I forsoothe:

Star Trek 2 – Return of the New Old Spock

The way they did the time traveling in the last movie means that all the old storyline is null and void. Good call on their part imo.

My brain just wants to read “Into THE Darkness”. “Into Darkness” sounds wrong.

I know! And here I thought we had it bad enough with Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

What?! It was ‘Dark of the Moon’? I seriously didn’t know that, my brain just inserted ‘Side’ in automatically. Ok to be fair I stopped watching the Transformers movies after the first one so maybe I wasn’t paying that much attention.
