It was John Boyega’s Star Wars script that ended up on eBay

Earlier this week, writer/director JJ Abrams revealed the almost unbelievable news that a full script for the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ended up for sale on eBay. Star Wars movie productions are usually locked down more watertight than a frog’s butthole, so for something like this to leak out was a major deal. And according to Abrams, it all came about because of an unnamed actor leaving their supposed-to-be highly secured script laying around.

And now the culprit has stepped forward himself… And we should have known we could never trust an ex-Stormtrooper!

Yes, John Boyega, who plays First-Order-soldier-turned-Resistance-hero Finn in the new Star Wars trilogy, was the one who let the proverbial cat out of the bag. Speaking to Good Morning America, the actor came clean, confessing that it all happened because of some “partying”. Of course!

What happened was… It was actually from my apartment, I was moving apartments, and I left my script under my bed. I was just like, you know what, I’m going to leave it under my bed in the morning and when I wake up in the morning, I’ll take it and then move. But then my boys came over, and we started partying a little bit, and then the script just stayed there. And then a few weeks after, this cleaner comes in, finds the script, and puts it on eBay for sixty five pounds. The person didn’t know the true value!

Boyega’s negligent party-boy antics could have resulted in one of the most anticipated films in recent memory being spoiled online if that cleaner had actually known what they were in possession of. A Disney employee spotted the script for sale and informed their higher-ups, and the studio quickly got eBay to remove the item before any harm was done.

The effortlessly charming Boyega has played the whole thing off as a joke, saying that “I actually thought this is a great opportunity for fans to read the movie before they see it. Maybe I’m onto something,” but there were definitely repercussions from the House of Mouse.

It was scary, man. I got calls from every official. Even Mickey Mouse called me, ‘What did you do?’ But it all worked out in the end.

Well, we’ll get to see for ourselves how the end of the Skywalker Saga works out when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits cinemas on 20 December. Hopefully, Boyega doesn’t have any more parties with his boys between now and then.

On a more serious note, I can’t help but wonder how many of these “leaks” are really planned. Disney or whoever obviously wants hype around their movies or whatever but they also can’t act like they want stuff to be leaked. So get a actor to make a oopsie. I’ve noticed it’s always the actors who play funny or silly (less serious) characters that accidentally leak things. Now this could just be because they are a bit silly and talk a lot and then say something that they shouldn’t, but it just feels too much sometimes to just be accidental

    “accidentally leaked”
“Placed on ebay by someone who didn’t know what it was”
    “Spotted by a Disney employee”

So a cleaner walks in, finds a script with no clue what it is and puts it on ebay instead of the trash?

Yeah, it was a marketing campaign. I guess they’ll do anything to get some buzz for this movie.

Yeah, unless the cleaner frequently finds stuff celebrities leave behind (a possibility if they work in a hotel used by famous people) and just always sells the stuff on ebay. Seems like a very ‘Merican thing

He literally said it was his apartment, so not a hotel…

Yes you are correct. But I was talking about the cleaner and that they might do this often because they work in places frequently used by celebrities. Like a hotel for example. Or an apartment even.

I’m assuming the cleaner knew what it was (probably knowing their employer is famous) but with no idea of the insane amounts of money it could actually go for. Must be a Trekkie.

I was about to say that John Boyega was the hero we always needed, but the more I read about it, the more I think this was just another one of those Disney viral marketing campaigns. The fact that nothing has been released from that “script” makes me think this is just part of trying to create buzz for a movie that so far has been a bit dead in the water. Check on Twitter and more people are talking about baby Yoda and the Mandalorian, and very few people are positively talking about Star Wars Something something Skywalker.

Their last attempt to get people talking about the movie kind of backfired with #TheyFlyNow. Of course, some of the PR veterans among us may say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, and although Disney was mercilessly mocked for #theyflynow, it still meant at least someone was talking about the movie. But it’s certainly not quelling the negative sentiment, and merely firing it up.
