Well, that was quick.

Just yesterday we brought word that Francis Lawrence and Bennet Miller had been added onto the shortlist of directors to replace Gary Ross for Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games. And now reports are coming in that Lionsgate have offered Lawrence the director’s chair, and it looks pretty likely that he’s going to take it.

As I mentioned yesterday, Lawrence was my backup (read: not delusional) pick after my dream choice of Alfonso Cuaron, so I really cannot complain about him taking over the reins. With The Hunger Games being lauded by critics and fans alike (including us) and it currently having grossed over $534 million worldwide, he is about to shoulder a huge burden to deliver on a worthy sequel. But his work in I Am Legend and Constantine has shown that he has a good grip on all the various elements that he would need to bring to the table for this next chapter in Katniss Everdeen’s story.

There are rumours going around though that Lawrence may not have been the first choice but that he was given the nod after Bennet Miller (Moneyball) and a previously unmentioned choice, Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) could not either fit the film into their already busy schedule (as I speculated for Miller) or were not willing to commit to the incredibly tight 4 month production window that they had to make the film, due to star Jennifer Lawrence’s limited availability.

Here’s the synopsis for Catching Fire (the novel) taken from Amazon:

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.
