I have to feel a little sorry for this new trailer for Byzantium. Its the first time that the man who brought us Interview With a Vampire, Neil Jordan, is getting back to some vampiric ways and it stars the talented and lovely Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan – plus it’s a pretty solid looking trailer on its own – so  this should be more of a big deal. Unfortunately, it chose today of all days to release, so I won’t be surprises if it gets overshadowed.

That being said, you should still check it out because certainly doesn’t suck. Well, it does, but in a good, normal vampire way.

Two mysterious women seek refuge in a run-down coastal resort. Clara (Gemma Arterton) meets lonely Noel, who provides shelter in his deserted guesthouse, Byzantium. Schoolgirl Eleanor befriends Frank and tells him their lethal secret. They were born 200 years ago and survive on human blood. As knowledge of their secret spreads, their past catches up on them with deathly consequence.

From what I can gather in between the few moments of not just staring at Gemma Arterton, Jordan and writer Moira Buffini seem to be flipping up some genre conventions. For one, it appears that getting turned into a vampire may now involve an army of bats and dancing under a waterfall of blood like you’re in a cheap softcore porno. Also vampirism looks like it’s now a male-exclusive club. Yes, all men suck, we get the subtext.

With Caleb Landry Jones and Johnny Lee Miller rounding out the talented cast, this certainly does look rather interesting. And it’s just refreshing to see a vampire movie where the male cast actually keeps their shirts on.

Byzantium will be taking a bite of cinemas on June 28, 2013.
