It's time to go to war in this new trailer for GANGSTER SQUAD

When a social-leper with a gun in his hand and not a sane thought in his head, walked into a Colorado movie theatre in July and shattered the lives of far too many people, one of the many repercussions of his crazed actions was that Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad had to go back to the drawing board. The film’s September 7th release was delayed by 4 months, as a pivotal scene involving a cinema shooting was cut out and the script reworked around it.

Well, the movie’s back now, freshly tweaked and looking ready for war. With your wallet that is, because this is looking so good that you may just end up seeing it multiple times.

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and–if he has his way–every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. “The Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.

Is it just me, or does Sean Penn look like he just stepped straight out of Dick Tracy? The man appears to be chewing scenery like the set was made out of bacon, and I’m loving it. Both Penn’s thespian mastication (hur hur) and bacon, I mean.

While Penn may be the most memorable due to all the saliva he’s flinging at the camera, the entire cast seems to be firing on all cylinders. Ryan Gosling in particular looks like’s about to charm his way into not only Emma Stone’s pants, but probably also the pants of all the female cinemagoers, the male homosexul cinemagoers and a couple of heterosexual male cinemagoers who for about 120 mins will seriously question their life choices.

Also, does Nick Nolte gargle with battery acid every morning to get his voice like that?

The film is looking superb thus far, which makes me and all my fellow comic geeks extra happy as this will more than likely be director Ruben Fleischer’s audition for the Justice League directing gig, particular since Gangster Squad writer Will Beall is the same guy that penned the JL script. If he can handle this cast and Beall’s script well (which he appears to have done), then I see capes and underpants worn on the outside in his future. And not just in some kinky Hollywood party kind of way.

Looks fantastic! Great cast – and I really cannot think of a movie right now in which Penn played the main villain.

I’m not so keen on the trailer, though – particularly the song used in the 2nd half (Jay-Z or Kanye, I think?). If the vibe represents the movie, this might not be the gangster epic we hope for. But I suspect the trailer is mainly to sell the movie, not reflective of its actual atmosphere.
