Wing Chung master Ip Man’s status in the martial arts world is legendary, which is why they make movies of his life more frequently than Darryn changes his underoos (so at least two films a year then). And the latest production to shine a light on Bruce Lee’s master is Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmaster. Now typical to Wong, the footage we’ve seen thus far of the kung fu flick has looked very arty, but that all changes with this new trailer.

Yes, it still looks to be shot very poetically, but thanks to some musical help from the Wu Tang Clan’s RZA (who recently directed/starred in his own kung fu endeavour, The Man With the Iron Fists) and a much better look at the film’s fight scenes, we can comfortably say that The Grandmaster is probably going to offer its fair share of kung fu slippers to asses as well.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, “The Grandmaster” is an epic action feature inspired by the life and times of the legendary kung fu master, Ip Man. The story spans the tumultuous Republican era that followed the fall of China’s last dynasty, a time of chaos, division and war that was also the golden age of Chinese martial arts. Filmed in a range of stunning locations that include the snow-swept landscapes of Northeast China and the subtropical South, “The Grandmaster” features virtuoso performances by some of the greatest stars of contemporary Asian cinema, including Tony Leung and Ziyi Zhang.

The Grandmaster will be kicking some rain-soaked butt on a limited international release on August 23, 2013.
