What’s in a name? Well, a hell of a lot if you’re a Marvel movie! Starting with Thor: The Dark World, Marvel have mostly (the Iron Man franchise excluded) been ditching the practice of appending numbers to their sequels in favour of post-script titles that are more descriptive of the film’s story direction. So when Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director recently unveiled a pic of his script for the sequel, but intentionally obscured the full title of the movie, it had fans getting up to all kinds of crazy sleuthing to work out what it could be.

Turns out, all they had to do was wait until somebody made a mistake, as Marvel Studios Head Kevin Feige apparently accidentally let the title slip while he was doing the press rounds for Ant-Man. So what is the title for those of not fortunate enough to be invited to Hollywood press junkets? Well, Gunn took to Facebook to confirm it all, also showing off some of the detective work that fans had done:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? I like it! Yes, it doesn’t give any hint to the story direction as some were hoping, but Gunn also explained later in the comments that he had actually come up with different titles for the sequel, but they ended up being too wordy.

“Yeah, I came up with a LOT of titles for Vol. 2. But because “Guardians of the Galaxy” is already so wordy, it seemed strange to add another bunch of words after it. I liked Vol. 2 the best, so that’s what I stuck on the cover of the screenplay – and, fortunately, the guys liked it.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 also has the dual purpose of being a nod to the way comic book story runs are grouped together, and of course, most importantly, harks back to the first film’s now famous mixtape “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” which factored so hugely into its unexpected charm and appeal. At the end of that film, Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill finally opened the gift he got from his dying mother as a kid, revealing “Awesome Mix Vol. 2”, which we never got to hear before the movie ended. Gunn previously told ETOnline that revealing this second mixtape was probably the hardest part of doing the sequel to such a beloved movie.

“Originally people kept asking me, ‘Don’t you feel a lot of pressure to do the second movie?’ and I didn’t in general. But I did feel a little pressure for the soundtrack because so many people loved it and we went platinum and all that other stuff. But I feel like the soundtrack in the second one is better. I feel like it’s better, so I’m excited about it.”

Better than the combination of Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love”? and David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream”? This I need to see.

But in case hellishly infectious feel good musical vibes isn’t your thing – and at this point I’m inclined to say that you may just be a soulless robot – Gunn also revealed to Collider that when it comes to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 we should get ready to feel some emotions.

“I think it’s going to be exciting. I think it’s a more emotional movie. It’s both a bigger movie and a smaller movie, because we focus more intensely on some of the characters. We get to learn a lot about fathers in the second movie, and I think we focus a lot on that.”

I think the only response I have to that is this animated gif of Donald Glover’s Troy from Community.
