James Mangold says he’s not directing the Star Wars Boba Fett movie – was he driven away by toxic fans?

Just yesterday I was saying how most Star Wars rumours usually turn out to be complete balderdash, but sometimes that can even happen to solid reports from reputed sources. That appears to be the case for the long-rumoured standalone Boba Fett movie which had been widely reported recently would be written and directed by James Mangold. With big publications like Variety and THR pretty much reporting this news as fact, you could see why everybody believed it despite Disney never making an official announcement. Maybe we should just have asked James Mangold.

While retaliating to somebody on Twitter who was criticizing the potential Boba Fett movie as the “worst idea ever,” the Logan filmmaker revealed that his next project is actually “a period car racing movie w/ Christian Bale & Matt Damon.” Mangold went on to clarify that there was “No Mandalorians involved” in this production and that people should “Stop reading so much gossip,” before rounding it all off with a very timely jab at the current controversial US politics.

Now, as Mangold points out, it could be that the reports for his original involvement in this project may just have been gossip, but there could also be some alternatives. Another recent report claimed that in the wake of Solo: A Star Wars Story’s unprecedented failure, Disney and Lucasfilm were canning all other standalone Star Wars movies. An individual within the Disney-owned ABC News would refute this just a short while later, but maybe there’s a kernel of truth? Maybe all standalone Star Wars movies have not been shelved, but a Boba Fett movie – which has always been a tenuous prospect to begin with based on how the iconic Mandalorian character is essentially nothing more than a cool helmet and a jetpack – did get the chop.

There’s another, more worrying alternative to why Mangold is now saying he’s no longer on board for a Boba Fett movie though. As you no doubt may have heard, Star Wars fandom is a toxic slag pit as certain, so-called hardcore fans have harassed filmmakers and actors online because they disagree with the story/character decisions of the movies. This is not a new thing, as news broke two weeks back that the actor who played Jar Jar Binks in the Prequel Trilogy was driven to the point of suicide by similar fans haranguing him for his role. Star Wars creator George Lucas himself stepped away from the franchise because of how everything he did got vilified to the extreme by these scum.

And I do call them scum. As a lifelong Star Wars fan myself, seeing how these hateful people go on is aggravating. And before somebody inevitably jumps on their keyboards to take me to task, I am not lumping all critical Star Wars fans in this group. I enjoyed the new Star Wars films for the most part, but they have legitimate filmmaking flaws that need to be discussed and addressed. I know people that really disliked The Last Jedi, but did so for very rational reasons. This is not what I’m referring to. I’m referring to hateful, derogatory comments and unsolicited personal attacks on people like The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, often for no other reason than the story he wrote went into a different direction as to what these fans, without any evidence, had built up in their heads would happen. Or, hell, just what race they are.

So what does this have to do with Mangold? Well, he and several other filmmakers have recently been taking to social media to speak out against this toxic harassment. In particular, how working on a Star Wars movie – a dream gig for many of these filmmakers who grew up with Lucas’ original films which in many cases was what inspired them to start their careers – is pretty much a social death sentence. No matter what you do, there will always be somebody who doesn’t just hate it, but goes out of their way to publically attack you on it in the most disgusting manner possible.

As Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie recently pointed out on Twitter in a lengthy cry against toxic fandoms (which has unfortunately now been deleted, but was well worth the read) that he was “cured” of his passion to make a Star Wars movie after seeing how Rian Johnson and his cast were harassed. McQuarrie’s subsequent tweets have called out these “fans” who can’t seem to tell the difference between criticizing a movie and attacking the people who made it (with some then going on to prove his exact point).

With an environment as hostile as that, would it really be that surprising to learn that Mangold was in fact going to make a Boba Fett movie but has now chosen to rather step away? Until we get something official from Disney, this is admittedly all still speculation, but I really can’t see how any filmmaker would willingly submit themselves to this.

Twitter recently ruined the UFC HW title fight result for me.
I don’t follow anyone. I have no followers. I’ve never tweeted a single thing.
Yet the bloody thing emails me ALL THE FOOKING TIME!
“So and so just tweeted THIS.”

      I. DON’T. CARE.

Then there are people like Jessica Price. Her twitter rant is causing gamers gate 2.0. And someone needs to report on it in a informed and unbiased way because the stuff I have seen from other sites disgust me.

“informed and unbiased” rules out most articles written these days.
Most journos these days seem intent on punting some or other ideology that they personally believe in, while bashing opposing views at the same time.
I dunno who the hell decided that people aren’t allow to disagree anymore, or when exactly it happened, but that mindset is worsening things for everyone these days.

I am on Twitter to post hate/complaints at Telkom each time my connection slows down…that is it. I actually have not gone on there in a while…I stay away from FB mostly as well, only share 9GAG jokes and travel photos there. #SocialMediaIsRuiningTheWorld

All these toxic fucked up fans…
Totally agree with Kervyn, it’s so damn messed up that they feel the need to harass these great filmmakers.
I didn’t enjoy Last Jedi, not by a long shot, but not once did I feel the need to start talking kak to the okes who made the movie. They did something they believed in, that they were passionate about, they stuck their necks out and opened themselves up to criticism. For that alone they deserve respect.
I’m sure they were expecting some sort of backlash, but damn, why do people feel the need to have such a huge go at them?!?
Small minded peons, all of them.

Just want to throw another possibility out there (though I 100% agree the scum from the Sarlacc Pit could be more responsible) – perhaps they do not want to work under someone who is Force-ing their own political agenda into everything? Because following those kind of orders risks opening up the Sarlacc Pit even more.

With regards to that, I really feel like it’s a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” type scenario.
If you have a movie that doesn’t included political agenda shit, then you get groups that talk kak about it.
Include an agenda, then suddenly you have people who hate that.

This world has become a living embodiment of the Kobayashi Maru scenario.

I think part of the issue is, at least the way I see it, the “extreme” and “forced” nature of the agenda involved. Also what those involved sometimes openly state in the media when faced with criticism along the lines of (sometimes explicitly) “we don’t need white men fans” and “it is only the white men who don’t like this” – they answer vitriol with vitriol. And that just fuels the vitriol and the trolls jump on that.

For me nothing can justify the vitriol thrown at individuals involved in the process (or thrown back by them). As you said in an earlier comment, they made something they believed in etc. I am one of those who liked the movie well enough, yet had some criticisms. Think I gave it a 6 or 7 out of 10 myself because there was so much that they did do “right”.

It’s become a norm in so many forms of media recently, very sadly.
In my current quest to find a literary agent for my novel, it’s so irritating to see that so many of them only want LGBT stuff. Or authors who fit in that category.
And just earlier, I read an article that also just plain irritated me.
          here, look at this:
          https://www.sott.net/article/390697-Business-Insider-scrubs-article-defending-Scarlett-Johansson-playing-a-trans-man

Like, if you read that original article that got pulled, I do not see anything wrong with it. Yet because some people didn’t like logic, it got pulled.

Wow, I read that article. It is disgusting this whole “agree with us or you are the devil” attitude!

Something I realized – we used to have “left”, “left leaning moderate”, “moderate”, “right leaning moderate”, “right”, and “extreme right”. In this age of SJW, we now have the extreme left, and they are acting more fascist than the extreme right has had the guts to do in decades. This in turn is making more people leave the “moderate” position and turning into the “right”, as they feel the “left” is attacking them. It seems the goal of some people in this world are to fracture us even more than we already are, and I for one am starting to hope more and more for a new Plague or an Alien invasion to unite and save humanity 🙁

It’s fascism. It really is. As soon as you start telling people “you’re not allowed to say that, you’re not allowed to think that”, it’s fascism.

heh, all these labels. Fuckit, we should just adopt D&D alignments.

Working on my backup characters for Tomb of Annihilation. Still need to settle on background stories and alignment, but the Warlock is leaning Neutral Evil and my Ranger has preferred enemy “humanoids” so he is definitely not “good” hehehe. Man I love DnD!

Ranger with “humanoids” as preferred enemies can be good. Depends on the character history.
If, for example, his entire village was destroyed by evil people and he escaped into the woods to become a ranger, then hey, he can be good. Chaotic good, humanoids as favoured enemy.

I get to choose 2 humanoids. Current campaign is Tomb of Annihilation, so was thinking of Yuan-Ti Purebloods and Tabaxi as the humanoids (other campaigns maybe more “normals”).

His “bond” portion on the character sheet reads: “I will bring terrible wrath down on the evildoers who destroyed my homeland. I am the last of my tribe, and it is up to me to ensure their names enter legend”. Yuan-Ti destroyed his village/people, Tabaxi allies knew it was coming and refused to help or warn. So he will take any opportunity to hunt and kill those.

If on another campaign, he will perhaps choose the more industrious races that are ruining nature…like maybe Dwarves, Humans etc.

Also, his name is Magua…like the traitor scout in Last of the Mohicans 🙂
