There are barely 4 months left until The Wolverine slices and dices its way in to cinemas, and somehow we are yet to see a single minute of footage from the quasi-sequel. In today’s world of giving away the entire movie while they’re still busy erecting the sets, that’s certainly an unique approach.
That’s not the only thing that’s different though, according to director James Mangold, who spoke about what makes the film standout, as well as exactly when we should be expecting that trailer.
Speaking to Total Film, Mangold revealed how Chris Claremont’s original comic arc (from which The Wolverine borrows quite heavily) makes for an unexpected superhero movie.
“The graphic novel is so adventurous. It plunges into these ideas of destiny, honour and revenge – as opposed to your standard superhero sagas, which are generally about some gigantic villain out to destroy the Earth, a city or a football stadium.
“Japan’s such an exotic location, in the sense that language and culture play such a huge role in the movie. Usually you don’t find that at all in these kinds of films. To be staking out our own ground and be saying something unique was really liberating for me.”
Something else that was probably liberating was finally being able to actually give pleading fans an answer to when we would see the trailer. When asked on Twitter if the rumours are true that the first teaser trailer will be shown in front of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which releases on 27 March, 2013, Mangold responded accordingly:
@Mang0ld: “The Teaser comes out on that date, yes. It will be about 2 minutes. The trailer (longer) will follow after that.”
So there you go, a reason to go see G.I. Joe: Retaliation, besides, you know, G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
Along with that diary appointment, some “badass” new images from the film have been released (courtesy of Total Film via Stark Industries), as well as several moody, black and white character portraits showing off everybody’s favourite clawed Canuck and all the main ladies in his new Japanese life.
The Wolverine stars Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, and Brian Tee and will be out on July 26, 2013.
