Last week we showed you the title reveal trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, and if there was ever more evidence needed to demonstrate just how much fans are geeking out over this film, that would be it. It was honestly nothing much, yet I have it on good authority that after it screened at Comic-Con, management needed to remove and burn all the carpets due to body fluid leakage.

So too was the announcement greeted that veteran actor James Spader had been cast as the eponymous character. And now we may have our first clue, courtesy of the man himself, on exactly how he will actually be playing the character.

Spader is currently out promoting his new TV series, The Blacklist, and while talking to The Inquirer about it, things naturally gravitated towards Ultron, and whether or not Spader had already begun preparing for the massive role.

“I have spoken to [writer/director] Joss Whedon about it. And yes, actually, just this weekend I went in for them to take very extensive photographs, head scans, body scans, and all kinds of things in preparation for figuring out how the hell I’m gonna fit in this Ultron character!”

Now there are two things we can take away there, unfortunately they’re both polar opposites. Firstly, the head and body scans would indicate to me that Marvel Studios were building a reference 3D CG model on which to base a fully digitally rendered Ultron that Spader would be providing the voice and motion capture for. This to me makes the most sense, given the character’s design.

Unfortunately, secondly, he does mention fitting into the character. Could they be making him some kind of Ultron suit to wear? I’m not too big a fan of this approach. One man in a tin can is enough for me.

Speaking separately to The Independent, Spader also mentioned what playing such an iconic comic book character meant to him and his family.

“I think it’ll be a lot of fun and it’s incredibly nostalgic for me. When I was a kid my best friend had trunks of comics and I didn’t have any so I used to love going for sleepovers at his house. Also I have three sons and two of them have a great interest in comics, so they’re excited I’m playing the role.”

The Avengers: Age of Ultron is expected to start shooting early next year, and is scheduled for a release on May 1, 2015.
