The 1961 film, Five Minutes to live, is now back in the regurgitation saddle, as director Jan de Bont has confirmed that he’ll be behind the camera for the infamous crime caper that starred the late Johnny Cash as an insane criminal.

This will be the first film for deBont since the 2003 film, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.Deadline has reported that Transparency’s Raul Inglis has penned a treatment for the remake, which will be produced by Joseph and Jack Nasser. The basic plot is still intact, where two men hold the wife of a bank manager hostage, ransoming her for cash. One of the thieves stay behind to keep an eye on the wife, while the other keeps tabs on the manager, with the threat of death imminent unless the one partner communicates with the other every five minutes.

The twist? The bank manager has been planning on ditching his wife for his Las Vegas mistress instead, providing a perfect oppurtunity for the unfaithful husband to be rid of his wife once and for all…

No word yet on a cast or when shooting begins, but imagine if Joaquin”Walk The Line” Phoenix played the role that the late Johnny Cash inhabited. The opportunity for in-jokes alone would make the remake worthwhile.

Is it just me or does that plot sound more than a little similiar to the Coens Fargo.

Which begs the questions, given such character driven material, is De Bont really the best director for this given his back-catalogue?
