Jared Leto reveals full Joker costume and finally talks about the character

There’s no denying that Jared Leto’s Joker is unique. The Oscar-winner’s spin on the Clown Prince of Crime in the upcoming Suicide Squad has already drawn its fair share of detractors for its gaudy tattoos and grill, but I have to admit that there’s something kind of creepy about it all. You know, “creepy” in a zombie male model at a Jean Paul Gaultier fashion show kind of way. At least that’s the vibe I’m getting from this first reveal of the Joker’s full costume courtesy of Empire (via Collider).

To be fair, if there’s anybody that can make an electric purple leather coat, drawstring tracksuit pants, a cane and some bare feet work, it’s probably Leto. The Suicide Squad trailer already gave us a taste of just how damn unnerving his Joker could be. And really, the Joker should be unsettling – and loud and colourful, as he is essentially the opposite of Batman. At least that’s how I look at it. But what about Leto himself? While the actor did his fair share of social media teasing leading up to the character’s initial reveal, he has been fairly quiet on the specifics of the role. But chatting to Empire (via CBM), he’s finally shared some info on how he got into character by going a little psycho himself.

“There was definitely a period of…detachment. I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games. But at the same time it was very painful, like giving birth out of my prick hole.”

Er… OUCH?!! AND NOW I’M NEVER SLEEPING AGAIN! THANKS!

Horrific imagery aside, Leto is fully cognizant of the fact that his version of the Joker is a far cry from what we’ve ever seen, going even more extreme than Heath Ledger’s twisted Oscar-winning rendition in The Dark Knight, but that kind of uniqueness is what the character demands.

“I always get the sense that The Joker may be much older than people think. It’s something different. If you don’t break rules, you’re not going to strike new ground. I think I’ll be cooling down for the rest of my life.”

Suicide Squad producer Charles Roven also explained that the character’s look was partially “inspired by Mexican cartels” (whatever that means), and that this version of the Joker was also “More social…a very successful and smart businessman besides being a sociopath.”

Director David Ayer also spoke about what makes Leto’s version so special.

“The Joker is the third rail of comic book movies. There’s a power to that character, and by some freaking miracle, through the incredible things Jared has done and the photography and all the other millions of things that went into it, we’ve cooked up something transcendent. He’s scary.”

We’ll find out just how scary when Suicide Squad debuts on August 5, 2016, and will see Leto lining up with Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Cara Delevigne and more. You can check out some of them in some more pics that was also revealed in the same issue of Empire (via CBM).

I like the design, but it’s not as unique as Ledger’s look. This joker reminds me a lot of the one from the original 60s TV series. Slap him in a purple suit and he comes close to Nicholson’s version.
