You look at Jason Bateman, and you see an actor who is perpetually cast as the nice guy. This is a guy, who exudes pure friend-zone pheromones in his movies. Bad Words marks a departure for Bateman though. It’s his directorial debut, and quite possibly the meanest character he has ever played in a film.

And it’s about damn time we got to see this side of him.

Jason Bateman (“Identity Thief”) makes his feature directorial debut with the subversive comedy “Bad Words.” Bateman stars as Guy Trilby, a 40-year-old who finds a loophole in the rules of The Golden Quill national spelling bee and decides to cause trouble by hijacking the competition. Contest officials, outraged parents, and overly ambitious 8th graders are no match for Guy, as he ruthlessly crushes their dreams of victory and fame.

As a reporter (Kathryn Hahn of “We’re the Millers”) attempts to discover his true motivation, Guy finds himself forging an unlikely alliance with a competitor: awkward 10-year-old Chaitanya (Rohan Chand of “Homeland”), who is completely unfazed by Guy’s take-no-prisoners approach to life.

Honestly, I laughed pretty hard at that trailer. Bateman is just perfect in the lead role, with a quiet hatred for all mankind that is simmering and waiting to explode. Rohan Chand looks like a great foil to Bateman as the young Chaitanya, and Bad Words looks like it could be the next cult hit along the lines of Bad Santa.

Bad Words is out next year M-A-R-C-H 28.
