I’ve been a huge fan of Jason Momoa for a very long time – specifically, ever since his badass Ronon Dex was hunting down Wraiths in Stargate Atlantis in the early 2000s. (Some of the CH team have even been fans for longer though they won’t admit it publicly. That’s right, Nick, I’ve seen your secret Baywatch Hawaii DVD boxset and poster collection) By keeping an eye on the career of the Hawaii-born actor, I can comfortably say that he’s definitely paid his dues to reach the heights that he currently has, headlining the upcoming Aquaman solo movie for Warner Bros’ DC Comics movie universe.
However, even though the ex-Game of Thrones star has now finally made it to the top after years of hard work, it doesn’t mean he still doesn’t have bills to pay. This is why this first trailer for upcoming action thriller Braven – which can be best described as “Generic: The Movie” – is not really surprising. What is different for Momoa though is that this is one of the rare occurrences in his recent career where he’s actually playing the hero. His work in Justice League notwithstanding, his filmography is strewn with villains and antiheroes, so it will be nice to see him be the straight-up good guy kicking some baddie butt in the best way possible. And that’s exactly what we see in this trailer below.
Jason Momoa takes no prisoners in this intense action-thriller. When Joe (Momoa) and his father (Stephen Lang) arrive at their remote hunting cabin, they’re hoping for a quiet weekend. What they find is a stash of heroin, hidden in the cabin by drug traffickers. When the criminals suddenly descend upon the cabin, Joe and his father must make a kill-or-be-killed stand for survival.
Yes, that movie does look like so many other action movies you will eventually find yourself watching when accidentally channel surfing to eTV six years from now, but if it’s one thing the hulking Momoa can do well, it’s kick ass in the most thrilling way possible. Also, it helps that I loved to pepper my diet of high art cinema with these cinematic junk food snacks all the time. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with an honest to goodness skop, skiet en donner throwback as long as you know what you’re getting. And hey, we’re even getting some Steven Lang and Garret Dillahunt in the deal, so I’m sold!
Braven was directed by first-time helmer Lin Oeding, a stuntman who’s known for his work on big titles like Inception, True Blood, The Equalizer, Spider-Man: Homecoming and a lot more, and produced by Momoa himself through his Pride of Gypsies company. It is scheduled for limited international release 2 February 2018.
