Mötley Crüe (2)

If the name of Jeff Tremaine is familiar and rhymey, it’s because the man is closely associated with the Jackass franchise. He’s been there since the beginning of that cult hit property, documenting Johnny Knoxville and friends as they put their bodies through the kind of pain reserved only for the worst criminals imaginable.

Thing is, Tremaine has done other work since then as well. And it looks like his next project is going to be digging up some dirt on hard rockers Mötley Crüe.

If there’s one band which is the benchmark for hedonism and wild partying, it’s  Mötley Crüe. They’ve done it all, from drugs and alcohol, violence, tragedy and one of you reading this is most likely the bastard child of Vince Neil. The Dirt is a book which has all that and more, as the band detailed their wilder years inside those pages. A film deal has been on the table for ages now, with Tremaine stepping up to the plate to helm that possible feature film.

As he explained to Deadline:

I’ve been offered a lot of scripts but Dirt is something I pursued with everything I had. I’ve wanted to make this going back to 2001, when we were just planning the first Jackass movie and I found out that David Gale at MTV Films had just optioned the book… We were deep into doing Jackass on TV and about to start doing Jackass: The Movie and we were all passing the book around and going, holy shit. We thought we were being crazy on the road. You read about these guys and it was like 10 times worse, though I think we’d done stuff that stands up to anybody else.

I connected with that book on so many levels. From a band of brothers that gets ripped apart and then pulls back together, or being part of a group that is expected to behave badly, and what happens to you when that becomes your expectation. What happens when everybody encourages you and gives you money to be the worst behaved you can be? You can do no wrong, and the worse you do, the more you’re celebrated. It is a story that is somehow familiar to me.

Tremaine might be onto something here. Biopics seem to be the next big thing in Hollywood, with Freddie Mercury, James Brown and Jimi Hendrix all getting a turn in the spotlight. But none of those guys could hold a candle to the excess practised by Mötley Crüe, and with the right cast and crew, The Dirt could stand taller than those other flicks.
