JJ Abrams regrets Khan-cealing his STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS secret

Having finally watched Star Trek Into Darkness this month, on a plane filled with more screaming child-beasts than Rigel 7, I kinda dug the film. Kervyn was pretty much spot-on with his review, indicating that while the movie was fun, it wasn’t exactly going boldly forward and was content to recycle several themes instead.

One big hook for the film though, was Benedict Cumbermatch’s reveal that he was in fact Khan all along. But when that moment arrived, it was more meh than whoa. And that’s something that director JJ Abrams regrets.

Speaking to MTV News, Abrams explained that keeping Khan a secret may have been a mistake. “The truth is I think it probably would have been smarter just to say upfront ‘This is who it is,’ Abrams said.

It was only trying to preserve the fun of it, and it might have given more time to acclimate and accept that’s what the thing was.

Although it wasn’t just Abrams that wanted to keep the reveal under wraps. Star Trek parent Paramount wanted things kept quiet as well according to Abrams:

The truth is because it was so important to the studio that we not angle this thing for existing fans. If we said it was Khan, it would feel like you’ve really got to know what Star Trek is about to see this movie. That would have been limiting. I can understand their argument to try to keep that quiet, but I do wonder if it would have seemed a little bit less like an attempt at deception if we had just come out with it.

Honestly, having Cumbermatch as Khan didn’t do much for the film. Sure, he may have been a different character, but he was more of a rage monster in a turtleneck than a true foe that would define Captain Kirk when compared to the original portrayal of the nemesis that Ricardo Montalban played.

Oh if you had only seen the chat between Darryn and I when we were deciding who would cover this story. I was khan-fident I would do it, but then Darryn had some khan-templation, which made me khan-cede defeat. It was un-khan-ny.
