Y U NO HAV IMAX 3D?!

Let’s just add this one to the ever increasing list of reasons why I hate the fact that we know longer have IMAX in this country. (But hey, we have the most species of fynbos in the world. That’s a fair trade-off, right? Right?!)

IMAX Corporation and Paramount Pictures has announced that the much anticipated sequel to 2009’s Star Trek reboot, is being released on the biggest screen around, with an extra dimension to boot.

And while I regularly decry the need for 3D (usually prefixed by some choice four letter words), there’s something about the thought of having a 3-story high image jump out at me that just seems cool. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a gimmick, but it’s a bloody impressive one!

What makes this news even more appealing though is the reveal that Abrams is following in Chris Nolan’s footsteps and has actually shot several of the film’s biggest and most important action set pieces on the IMAX format. As anybody who’s seen Batman Begins on the super-sized screen can attest, the fidelity achieved with those IMAX camera rigs just cannot be matched.

My only point of concern here – despite what Damon Lindelof might be preaching – is the fact that this film is going to be a post-conversion 3D job. The only thing I can think of that’s worse than a gloomy, overly dark film is a 3-story high gloomy, overly dark film!
