John Carpenter on board Escape from New York remake

I am tired of it, tired, tired, tired of it! Remakes of movies that should be left to mature in their juices of cult classic status, pulled from their resting places by Hollywood only to have CGI electrodes thrust into them in order to destroy remake them! Cough. Sorry about that. Let me calm myself…

My beloved Escape from New York looks like it is finally set to see the light of the 21st century under the direction of 20th Century Fox. It’s bad enough that the script has been handed around like a hot potato but with executive producer John Carpenter showing bugger all enthusiasm at a 2014 Halloween Q&A I don’t hold out much hope. In fact Carter, who was the original director for the 1981 film, went as far as saying that the remakes of his movies are just paydays:

What I do is, I sit on my couch, I extend my hand, and a check drops [into it]… They remake everything these days, it doesn’t mean anything. They just remake it because they think that the audience is so stupid that they won’t go see anything original. They look down on you, don’t you see that? I just want to get the check, that’s all I give a shit about.

Ouch. Carpenter is supposed to be on board to ‘exert creative influence’, whatever that means… Rumours were also that Dan Stevens (from the awesome movie The Guest), Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim) and Jon Bernthal (The Wolf of Wall Street) would take up the eye patch and from Kurt Russell and play Snake Plissken but as yet nothing concrete has been confirmed.

I haven’t had a great experience of remakes of late, with Robocop coming across as a new movie entirely and Total Recall losing all of its predecessor’s humour, wit and charm I think leaving them alone is a good start. But that’s just me. What do you think? Do you want to see a brand new Escape from New York and if so who would you have as the legendary Snake Plissken?
