John Wick isn’t just a great action movie starring the world’s most vengeful pet owner, but probably something else that escaped my attention due to the fact that I was constantly slobbering at the ridiculously kinetic action sequences that made that film so damn good.

First-time directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch hit the ball out of the park with their debut flick, that starred Keanu Reeves as the as an assassin skilled in the art of actually aiming for the head, out for blood in a shadowy world where contract killers had their own secret society.

Naturally, everyone who saw the film wanted a sequel. And said sequel is happening, but with half the directing team returning to helm the new project. According to Collider, Stahelski will take over the sequel, which will feature Keanu Reeves returning to the role.

The thing about the first John Wick film however, is that it’s a pretty much done-in-one film. A gangster makes one bad decision to piss off the worst person possible, and pays the price with dozens of Eastern-European Bratva caught in the crossfire.

So how would a sequel work then? What kind of emotional trigger would be needed to bring John Wick back from the dead? As Stahelski and Leitch explained this earlier this year, they’ve still got some ideas brewing:

“We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original,” Stahelski said. “It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character.

That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first.

Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome.”

I’m damn excited for the sequel, and after the success of the first film, I’m certain that distributor LionsGate is more than willing to throw extra cash at Stahelski to make a bigger sequel when Reeves and co check back into the Continental Hotel.
