Man, I could swear that there was some film that was supposed to release earlier this year, something with a life-like lack of hair and a smackdown grip that would knock the taste out of my mouth…in 2D.

Oh yeah, it was GI Joe: Retaliation! Originally due out way earlier this year, the film was pulled back so that it could be retooled for 3D and more Channing Tatum, resulting in it only coming out next year March. Here’s what director John “Step Up” Chu had to say about the whole fiasco.

Chu spoke to MTV Geek about the sequel, expressing his desire to make the film worth the extra wait for fans:

I really want to push how we use the 3-D. Especially since we pushed the movie date, I want to fulfill the promise to the fans that the 3-D will be great, and enhances the experience of the movie. So every step of the way, I’m in that room, watching… It’s hurting my eyes, but we’re getting it better, and pushing it further.

The thing is, GI Joe was originally shot in only two glorious dimensions, before the conversion work started, and that’s something that Chu knows about, having shot Step Up 3D and Justin Bieber: Never say Never in native 3D;

If we had shot it in 3-D, there’s a lot of things that we would shoot in a 3D way. Fortunately, a lot of our shots, I guess it was in my brain anyway.

We had a lot of depth in our shots, or let our shots play longer. For me, if we’re going to do this, we have to make sure it enhances the experience. That’s where we are right now, and it’s a slow painful process, to be honest!

The biggest surprise though? Chu wants to add some enhancements to the film. Ones that don’t rhyme with greedy;

I’m trying to convince them to give me a couple days to do a couple of enhancements. But as of right now, we’ll see what they let me do. I really want to shoot some of the sections in 3-D to give it that edge… But we’ll see if time permits, and they’re down to do that.

As for that other project of his starring an Eternian prince wearing a nipple harness, Chu said that the He-man project is still in early development at this stage:

Moving onto Masters of the Universe, Chu said they were still extremely early in the process:

We’re working on the script, to make it better and stronger. We’re designing a bunch of stuff. I learned on Joe that to make it right, you have to do a lot of experimenting first, and you have to trust that during the process you’ll find where the tonal line is… It’s so delicate.

How early is it really then? Too early to even cast some actors for Masters of the Universe, says Chu;

A lot of people ask, who are you going to cast? We’re not even there yet, we’re just trying to get the character of the movie down. This is one of the most fun parts, where all the possibilities are open, and we’re just playing in the sandbox.

What, no return performance from Frank Langella as Skeletor? I don’t want to see your film then, Mr Chu. But as for GI Joe: Retaliation, even if it is being dipped in 3D, I still want to see it.

Visually, I’m pretty certain that Chu can nail the film, but as for story and character? We’ll just have to wait until next year then to see if he can make the wait worthwhile.

    Chris Hemsworth as He-man. Jennifer Lawrence as She-ra. Calling / wishing it.
