Josh Boone is certainly a busy man – he currently is busy with work on New Mutants for 20th Century Fox and is also in line to direct an adaptation of one of Stephen King’s biggest books The Stand. However, he has also been tapped in s director for the Vampire Chronicles and as part of that project, it has now been reported that he will be directing a planned Interview with a Vampire remake, having already written a script treatment for it, alongside Jill Killington.

Back in 2014, Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment acquired the rights to Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles book series, and were looking to film the second and third books in the series, The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned. Rather than do anything with the first book, Interview with a Vampire. Since bring Boone on-board for both of those films and it seems he may have taken the entire series to heart and written that treatment for the first one as well.

I personally think the first Interview with a Vampire film was brilliant and had a great cast, but if they are to make a series out of it all, it makes sense to redo the first film and try and create some uniformity across the series. It will also help introduce the story to a younger audience who may have missed out on that classic (shame on you).

Who will play the key role of LeStat, which was played by Tom Cruise in the first film I think will also be interesting. Boone recently tweeted the following picture of Jared Leto, with the title, There Can be only one LeStat. Whether this is a confirmation of Leto for the role or simply one of Boone’s numerous trolling tweets remains to be seen, though I think Leto will indeed fit the role perfectly. Whether he will be willing to commit to all the films given his schedule and demand, is another thing entirely.

The first installment in the novels, Interview with the Vampire, was made into a film in 1994 that stars Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. A second film followed, Queen of the Damned, in 2002 with Aaliyah playing the eponymous bloodsucker and Stuart Townsend playing the vampire Lestat.. The most recent literary chapter in The Vampire Chronicles, titled Prince Lestat, hit bookstores in October of 2014, with another titled Blood Paradise forthcoming. If the remake is successful, expect all the films to follow on soon.

With that other of Rice’s works, The Mummy also in production – I wonder if they will try and cross-over some themes and perhaps create a Connected Monster Universe or something. Its probably a pie in the sky idea – but something which has been mentioned before with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci seen as the key producers behind that idea.
