Joss Whedon confirms AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON to introduce characters we haven't seen yet

We’ve seen about half a dozen trailers and TV spots for Avengers: Age of Ultron now, and they’re usually all about 2-minutes in length. So no, these are not those skinny teasers all the cool kid movies like to use. And yet, it took up until the very last trailer two weeks ago, before we finally got to see Paul Bettany’s Vision on-screen, and even then it was merely for about two seconds worth of screen time. And we still all lost our geeky minds.

So imagine how we’re going to react when another fan favourite character suddenly shows up in the movie unexpectedly after having been kept a secret for the last year and a bit. Because that is exactly what is going to happen. In an interview with Marvel.com itself – so you know this is legit – writer/director Joss Whedon spoke about why he picked Paul Bettany to play Vision, why Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were brought into the story and what the team dynamic is like now, but then right at the end of interview, briefly confirmed that besides for the huge cast we already know about, Age of Ultron will be giving us our first taste of characters we never seen on-screen before.

Hmmm, so who could it be? The most obvious answer would be Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, seeing as how the movie clearly has a Wakanda connection, but it’s already been said that he’ll be showing up in Captain America: Civil War for the first time. The next likely candidate is clearly Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. Back in August of last year, Badass Digest’s Devin Faraci claimed to have read an early draft of the script that included Captain Marvel being revealed as part of a new team of Avengers. But since then, Faraci himself has noted that we’ve seen many differences between that script and what is being shown in the trailers, and that Captain Marvel was possibly removed from the later script drafts. But could she have been written back in somehow?

Introducing her here in her civilian identity, instead of as a full-fledged superhero would be a great introduction for when she eventually gets her Kree-based powers in her solo movie in 2018. But would Marvel actually have cast somebody in the role already this far down the line? And if they did, would they really have been able to keep it a secret for this long? They showed with Iron Man 3‘s Mandarin reveal that they can really play things close to the chest when they need to, so I wouldn’t put it past them.

The other really high profile character introduction – which would actually rely on an even higher level of secrecy – would of course be Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. If Marvel had somehow found their actor already, it wouldn’t take much to just film a short cameo scene to splice him into the film. Hell, if they wanted to show the character in-costume, they wouldn’t even need to have cast an actor, they could just go the full CG route like they did with Thanos at the end of Avengers. He doesn’t have to do much, he just needs to show up and fans would lose their minds.

But personally, as cool as those two reveals would be, I think we’re going to be getting our first look at Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. He’s already been name dropped in Captain America: The Winter Soldier so having him show up in the flesh now makes sense. Plus, he’s been officially cast in the role long enough to have been around when Marvel shot those additional scenes for Age of Ultron back in January. The movie is scheduled to begin shooting in May, so you know that they’ve already done their costume tests and nailed down that movie’s script, so he’s perfectly eligible for a cameo appearance.

Who do you guys hope to see show up in the movie? Anybody besides Darryn also hoping it’s Squirrel Girl?

I don’t know Kervyn, I’m pretty sure Darryn is still holding out hope for Batman. 😉
